IOWA STATE GAME NOTES

From the season thread, more about the game with some Butler notes:

*******************************************************************************************

Looked up the Butler game preview if peeps are interested in any info about them. Our own previews don't usually contain much about the opponent. Butler is Diew's old team so that is two games to start the season with a Cyclone player connection. Picked for 8th in Big East sandwiched between DePaul and Provenience. Butler had a nothingburger scrimmage versus team lost to Simpson last year so they haven't really played yet.

Some quotes from Butlersports.com :

Butler will try to knock off an Iowa State program that has not lost a season opener since 1994!
How Do You Diew - Iowa State senior Nyamer Diew began her collegiate career at Butler (2020-21). With the Bulldogs, Diew played in 16 games, making 10 starts. She averaged 5.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
Butler had five players shoot 40% or higher from 3-point range last year and three more shot over 35%. (didn't dig into who of these are back).
Anna Mortag and Rachel Kent are reunited at Butler after playing together at IUPUI during a historic 2021-22 season. Under the direction of Parkinson, the Jags went 24-5, won the Horizon League Tournament and punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. IUPUI took #11 Michigan into overtime at the start of the year and moved forward to defeat #15 Iowa with Mortag and Kent in the mix. New Coordinator of Recruiting and Creative Content Director Madison Wise was also a graduate transfer (Iowa State) on that team.

Two games in a row with two close ISU ties.

Diew has very few ties with the current Butler team, however. Looks like only two players remain from three years ago (Dumont, A. Stoddard), and the coaching staff has been completely turned over.

Butler was not a good team last year, but they are returning some decent players and the latest IUPUI transfer is good. The earlier IUPUI transfer is also good, but she arrived a year ago and therefore falls under "returning some decent players".

Butler may not be a world-beater, but ISU is fully capable of losing this game and ending this streak (which is not a particularly important streak anyway). We are a very young team up against a team with both experience and talent.

Have we had confirmation whether Diew will play? BF sounded cautiously optimistic a few days ago, but I don't know if we've heard anything since then.

Yeah, I just saw that Butler noted it. I heard it repeated on broadcasts before at the beginning of each season but agree with you it's just more of a trivia thing than any great streak. Also agree that this isn't the automatic easy win we usually see at the beginning of every season, for reasons everyone is aware of. No Diew might make this pretty close.

On radio pregame BF said Diew will play no minutes restrictions but Kelsey not starting and questionable to play with a foot issue.

16-12 ISU end Q1. Not great shooting for ISU and some definite defensive lapses, but really not looking too bad all things considered. I think we'd be in a lot more trouble had Emily's absence been a sudden thing, but they've had a lot of opportunity to practice without her and it shows.

K Joens with the first official three of the season late in the quarter.

EDIT: 7-13 from the field actually isn't bad. It just felt worse than that.
