History of losing games after other games go in our favor?

Not sure how to ask this, but for the 20 years I've been following Iowa State football, it seems like whenever another game gives us a favorable position, like taking first place in the conference, we inevitably lose that next game.

Does anyone remember games like tonight in other years? With Oklahoma losing today, a win would put us tied for first with Texas and a huge game November 18th.

I can't think of any others right now, but I certainly feel like it was a huge deal during the Purdy years.

Agree, it didn’t feel like we were ready for the moment. We’re still really young and lacking depth. I’m hoping these competitive games spur growth and maturity to improve depth and have a great year next season. We have to keep contributing to WeWill and keep our young talent through portal season. Then next year will hopefully be a big year.

This is kind of like basketball some years when they get off to a nice start in conference but then drop a few as the season wears on and talent/depth win out.

You are who you are and if you're average (like ISU football) things tend to even out.

I just hope ISU comes out playing with a purpose the next three games. That was missing tonight for some reason.

We didn't have David Montgomery for the first half of the Texas game because Baylor decided they couldn't handle losing to us.

Yep. Thats why yesterday morning I said I felt a sense of dread. I felt it coming all day.

It seems every time I start to think something special is happening, that we might actually win, and compete for a league title or beat a ranked team or whatever... this happens.

ISU dealt with first place fine in 2020
 
Different sport, but I remember a Hoiberg team that was seemingly 0-6 every time they got themselves in the top 10 for the week.

I’m sure this is just our victim mentality of being a cyclone fan, but it certainly seems real.

It's not quite the same, but what comes to mind to me is the 2010 game against Utah in Ames. We were only 3-2 at that point and got destroyed by Iowa that year. But I really remember us feeling some big momentum coming into that game. We knew Utah was good, but not sure how good. I remember feeling like if we could win that game, it would really springboard us into the rest of the season.

We completely fell on our face. Utah ran over us 68-27. What I remember feeling was "oh, so we're not actually that good."

Yes! We'd get ranked #9 and then lose the next game. Every time
