Official Apology Thread: Has the rot set in?

I think it's fair for anyone that thought the rot was setting in, or even wanted CMC fired to be like "Yep, I might've jumped the gun, and I'm glad I was wrong."

No one needs to apologize lol we're talking about sports here. I think everyone can agree that they didn't see this coming but they're very happy it did.
It seems like we've had a series of coaches over the past 25 years that started strong before sputtering out. Eustachy, Rhodes, and Prohm all come mind. It's easy to understand how some looked at 2021 and 2022 being relatively disappointing, plus the Ohio and Iowa games and got that funny old feeling once again.

It sure looks like Campbell has this year's team on the right track. One of my main complaints about Campbell's tenure has been the one score games. His record isn't great (17-28 by my count), and it happens way too often (45 of 97 games), sometimes against teams that it shouldn't (UNI, Drake). The last three weeks, this team has done a great job of building early leads and keeping the game just out of reach. Sure, I'd love to see them put way the other team by the 4th quarter, but comfortable wins are a fine stepping stone with a team this young.

Hell, I'm worried what this place will be like even if we just lose our last 2 (texas, kstate). We could be 7-3 convinced we're going to the 'ship.
If we win the next 2 I think 99% of people will still be super happy about this season. Last 2 games would be a cherry on top but far from an expected win IMO

CMC likely has the least amount of blowouts too re: the one score games.

I'll hang on to the slow Septembers as an issue but I'm willing to trade it for a bowl game.

Agreed. The blowouts have been few and far between particularly the past 7 years. What constitutes a blowout is debatable, but I think 3 scores is pretty reasonable. I'm counting 6, with three coming in 2016 (Iowa, Texas, West Virginia). ULM in 2020, TCU in 2022 and Oklahoma earlier this year are the other three.

It seemed like even in our "good" years (okay, not horrible years), there would be one or two games when a team just absolutely unloaded on us.

Yeah, just to look at the Rhoads era, all three bowl seasons (2009, 2011, 2012) had multiple 3+ score losses.

2009: 3 such losses (Iowa, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State)
2011: 4 such losses (Texas, Baylor, Missouri, Oklahoma)
2012: 2 such losses (Oklahoma State, Texas)

I mean, that's pretty incredible, with Campbell currently at as many 3+ score losses since his first season as Rhoads averaged in his bowl seasons. (To be a bit generous to Rhoads, the Big 12 was probably higher scoring at that time than it is now, so blowouts were likely more common. Still though...)

It was crazy how quickly some turned on CMC early this season. There was very little tolerance for the events that led us to all the youth on the field. I hope he does not leave Iowa State and I don’t think he will, but I would think all the noise last year and early this year will not go unnoticed.

Talk about what have you done for me lately!

It wasn't just the beginning of this season. Last season was a mess. Two seasons ago when ISU had freaking Brock Purdy and Breece Hall and went 7-6? I can understand why some fans were getting upset. I like Cambell and hope he coaches at ISU for a long time, but it hasn't been pretty the last couple of seasons.

Last season and the start of this season were somewhat expected and there were clear reasons for the struggles. We loaded up with upperclassmen in 2021, so we knew we would be inexperienced in 2022. The gambling situation extended that inexperience into the start of this season. CMC is clearly the most successful coach in our lackluster history and has done remarkable things with this young group. Why is it hard to admit that many fans were far too quick to call for CMC to go.

I don't know. If we win the next two, we still have that one loss, so it's all bad.

If we win out, oh, my goodness. We'll find a way to be unhappy with 9 wins.

This is why I'm not super apologetic either. Going back to the year prior, we were in the middle of a really, really bad stretch of football. And the Ohio loss was about as uninspiring as you could get. I think most people had the same thought-- he's earned a chance to figure this out but he better get going. And he would appear to have made adjustments and has done well to right the ship.

So while maybe a bit of an overreaction, I don't think it was unjustified at the time.

I feel like some folks should be more honest with themselves. Simply put, it was a knee jerk reaction.

After all, the real reason for the “rot” setting in for Danny Mac and Paul Rhoads was that their recruiting went downhill. In DM’s case, it was a combination of that “big” JC year, and his habit of getting in a pissing match with Iowa over how many Instate kids he could sign.

In CMC’s case, the trend has been the polar opposite. His signing classes since the Fiesta Bowl have all been a notch above their predecessors, not a decline.

My own replies to the original posts still stand.

That said…maybe some rot HAS set in. In (cough) certain poster’s brains. :D

*that was not aimed at the post I’m replying to.

I just like living in reality. And this game will tell us what reality is.
This isn’t rocket science. All of the talented underclassmen should have given any rational person their answered weeks ago.

After all, whether “rot has set in” isn’t solely about THIS year. Not hardly.
