Official Apology Thread: Has the rot set in?

Im about as big of a Campbell fanboy around. I remember.

Counterpoint: every September other than last year, 1-7 vs Iowa, Texas 2017, 2018, 2-3 bowl games.

For me, more than results the unhinged moments at key times haven’t seemed to be coincidental.

Shoulder checking your starting qb on national tv, going after an ******* that says he’s on the hot seat, losing his **** in conference championship with the game still in reach.

“I love him. I f****in love him!!” But the team takes after their leaders. Something is amiss in winning in the margins and staying within yourself in the face of adversity.

I think he’s actually a lot more of a cut throat competitor at his core, but then he over corrects into saying things that sound like winning doesn’t matter at all.

He’s working out that balance. I’m confident he’s a great leader, loves his players, and has done amazing things at ISU, and I’m beyond thankful he’s at ISU.

I don’t know if it’s the perspective of 2020, coaching his daughters softball team etc, but I thought he could take ISU to THAT next level.

I’m very happy with where he has the team, just trying to figure out what that vision is and the post Iowa press conf, and Ohio meltdown we’re not good signs for me.
I don't think you are, LOL

Loved CW’s comments on Podcasts saying this is perhaps Campbell’s finest coaching job yet. My biggest problem with the naysayers is that the cure they were proposing to fix Iowa State’s problems was to fire Campbell. It is inevitable. Get a head start and fire Campbell. Because that is what a “Yes” vote meant. And now we are getting the inevitable backtracking where they say they were just venting. Which proves they just make noise and *****. I am enjoying this run. Tough games ahead.

Whether I voted or not…the team was in a bad place after the loss to Ohio. I groused about it just as many other fans did. We were watching a terrible product at that time. Even the win over OSU was a haphazard mess at times. But…it was the beginning of righting the ship. Cincinnati is proving to be a very bad team and that was our best game to date. Today…weather was a factor and even with the team playing Jekyll/Hyde all day they still won. Going to need the best game of the season next weekend to beat a good KU team. Def possible….

This is why I'm not super apologetic either. Going back to the year prior, we were in the middle of a really, really bad stretch of football. And the Ohio loss was about as uninspiring as you could get. I think most people had the same thought-- he's earned a chance to figure this out but he better get going. And he would appear to have made adjustments and has done well to right the ship.

So while maybe a bit of an overreaction, I don't think it was unjustified at the time.

My biggest frustration with the “rotters” is their lack of understanding of Iowa State history and what this program is capable of moving forward in the new Big 12.

Campbell is 51-45 at Iowa State. At the time of the poll he was 47-44. Next year he will pass McCarney (56) for most wins as an Iowa State head coach. His .526 winning pct is only behind Earl Bruce and he will pass that with a win on Saturday. With another win this season he will have Iowa State in a bowl game in 6 of his 8 years. With one more win this season we will secure a 6th winning conference record in his 8 years. We have a Big 12 championship appearance, a Fiesta Bowl win and some of the best recruiting classes this school has ever seen.

Most importantly he is young. He will turn 44 in late November and that means that if the fanbase isn’t stupid, we could be lucky enough to have Campbell for another 10-15 years. This is the golden era of ISU football and it could easily turn into a stretch of 20 years (total).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with going to bowl games 3 out of every 4 years and cycling up for a 8-4 or 9-3 season once every 4 years. It could be even better in the new Big 12.

The same fans will do the same thing with T.J. the minute he misses the NCAA tournament. It is infuriating because it gets back to coaches and it is painted as the fanbase’s position. And it could be the reason why a coach takes a lateral move to a place like Michigan State, etc.

Enjoy the stretch people. I’ve attended ISU games since 1985 (8 years old). The growth of this program from Walden to Paul R. was incredible. But MC has accomplished more than anyone could have possibly dreamed. Build the man a f’ing statute rather than trying to run him off during a tough stretch.

This is wild. Feel like this is all a pretty measured critique of my favorite/best coach we’ve had at least in my lifetime.

Do those rating it as dumb want nothing but 100% positivity? Coaches review film with players. They get better.

Fans can’t do his job, but we can identify patterns that need to be corrected.

Y’all bout to radicalize me

Can’t speak for anyone else, but I fought for Danny Mac, Rhoads, and Prohm long after others were ready to move on.

Post Ohio only served for me to honestly question if I was seeing things optimistically or objectively.

I don’t believe I voted yes.

It’s funny because it’s the same people absolutely shitting themselves every time we give up a 7-0 run or we get up by 9 points in any random basketball game.

I think it's fair for anyone that thought the rot was setting in, or even wanted CMC fired to be like "Yep, I might've jumped the gun, and I'm glad I was wrong."

No one needs to apologize lol we're talking about sports here. I think everyone can agree that they didn't see this coming but they're very happy it did.

Need another win to cement it as balancing things out a bit.

If they go 0-4 over the next month this place will be fire. Even more so if it's a slow start for basketball.

For sure.. I remember writing a while back that if we end up getting to 6 wins, people will still be pissed off stating we should've gotten 8. I understand it, but that's just not how it works.

Hell, I'm worried what this place will be like even if we just lose our last 2 (texas, kstate). We could be 7-3 convinced we're going to the 'ship.

I don't really fault people for being extremely upset in the immediate aftermath of the Ohio game, because of how demoralizing it was.

However, I do still think it's ridiculous that anyone already had those sentiments after the Iowa game, which some did. It felt like that group of people was really looking for reasons to decide that the coaching changes wouldn't work, rather than maybe waiting more than a couple of games to make a judgment. As I said at the time, the Iowa-Iowa State game has been notoriously unpredictive of anything that happens in the rest of the season, even prior to Campbell's tenure. As it turns out, a game where your quarterback and other key players have food poisoning or norovirus also is not very predictive.
