Bobby knight dies

For the record, I think Coach Knight was a real dip…a bully, abusive and hypocritical. That being said..”A Season on the Brink” was a fascinating read. The chapter “Damon” was almost surreal. His assistant coaches really had to cater to his strange moods and attitudes.
Re the hypocritical part..he railed against his student athletes having to play with an 8 pm tip off that would impact their studies. He was also prone to make his players practice until the wee hours after returning from an away game.
FWIW, I have a cabin in southern Wyoming and a friend that guides on the North pPlatte River for flyfishing…in his long career, the only client he terminated at lunch time was….Bob Knight. And this is a guy who’s guided hundreds of people. Remember...he’s also the fellow that shot his friend while grouse hunting in Wisconsin . And told the friend to not report the incident.
As Vonnegut would say: “and so on”.

I mean he disliked the press as do many but he wasn't shy about telling them either. How many times have we knocked on Randy P here for his dumb questions and wished he'd get a response like this on one of them. This was more just Knight being a comedian when he had moments like this and he also wasn't afraid of calling out inaccurate BS in his press conferences either.

I have no personal ties to Knight. I probably viewed his antics more as entertainment than anything. I'm not sad of his passing nor am I someone of the view of "good riddance" when I heard of it. I guess I have the view/mindset of that no matter the type of person one thinks of someone sometime during their life they had a positive influence on someone that probably changed them for the better just as much as they probably hurt some people along the way too. Who are we to judge, we all will face our maker someday. I just view it as put yourself in the shoes of someone that person's life they touched in a positive way that is mourning that maybe they did something for them that put them on a better path than they would have been without them in their life at a given moment. There is no denying Knight has some negative aspects of his life just like we all probably have things we are ashamed of and would have done differently if we could. But those things should also not cancel out any good that came from their life as well. As someone said he'll probably have many former players coaches and others at his funeral and those people likely wouldn't be in attendance if he hadn't had a meaningful impact on their lives at some point so you can choose to focus solely on one person's faults and downfalls and spread more hate or you can take the high road and just keep it to yourself if all you have to share is negativity and hate.

He was no saint for sure. I've yet to hear an interview today from a former player that didn't appreciate everything he did for them and taught them.
Do you really think the media is seeking out former players that would have something negative to say, and if they are do you think those former players are interested in talking about it right now?

Agree, but I have to wonder what would have happened if Knight coached in the transfer portal era.
That is a really good question. Knight's era doesn't even resemble today.

Back when Knight coached, players had very little power when it came to the coach/player dynamics. Coaches could treat players like crap and get away with it. They could decide which universities you could NOT transfer to, the stigma associated with transferring out of a program was more negative, and you had to sit out a year (plus lose a year of eligibility if you transferred within your conference).

Unfortunate choice of words in this excerpt:

... it was impossible not to be choked up at the sight of Knight at Assembly Hall ...
I mean he very literally knew how to get people to choke, so it works.

I had actually somehow never heard the story of him punching the cop in Puerto Rico and saying “Puerto Ricans, “F—’em, f—’em all.… The only thing they know how to do is grow bananas.” I'm trying to imagine the category 5 **** storm that would ensue if a coach of his stature did something like that today.

What
To everyone who dumbed my post. I hope you don’t get bullied by someone who ruins your life. Let alone the countless lives knight destroyed to make himself look like a hero. I’m not about people like that. Keep singing his praises because he won some basketball games.
What about the countless players that loved the guy and say he had a huge positive impact on their lives? Do they not count?

Count for what? All Bullys have friends that like them right? Does that excuse their actions against the abused because they have people that like them? So it's ok to do what he did because some people liked him? That is a weird for me to wrap my head around that philosophy in life. It's all good to do whatever as long as some people liked you

How did you feel about Larry Eustachy?

He was a bully and a d*ck. Pathetic how he berated and embarrassed that tournament administrator who started the press conference when Knight was late. But Knight was a great coach, great for the schools he coached, and cared for his players. RIP coach.
