In memoriam of Brian Ferentz as Iowa's OC

With regard to the future of Iowa's football program, I think the public's focus might be on the wrong person. Instead of focusing on Kirk, the focus should probably be on Phil Parker.

Iowa football has had success for two reasons, and neither of them include Kirk:

1. Consistently one of the weakest schedules in the country.

2. Phil Parker

Promote Phil and his attention gets pulled away some.

I think if woods is their guy and Kirk sticks around that woods is the next OC.

My tinfoil hat tells me that BG leaked this on purpose, knowing full well it would not only cheer the fans, but piss off Kirk on multiple levels. First, its midseason which he hates. Second, he has to answer questions about it, which he hates. Third, it shows she is actually going to be a real boss, which he hates.

So why would she do it this way? As my old boss said "help him find the door" i.e. make his life at work so hell that he quits, because its easier than firing someone.

BG can't really fire Kirk right now because history and still winning, plus his contract buyout is a lot of $$. But she can make his life unpleasant and see if he will retire - or at least negotiate a retirement with reduced contract buyout.

Our conference schedule has typically been pretty weak relative to what it could be (and will be starting next year) but our SoS is far from being one of the weakest in the country. In 2022 it was #30, in 2021 it was #24, in 2020 it was #43, in 2019 it was #30. The lowest SoS we've had since 2010 was #60 in 2014. Even the Fake ID year 2015, our SoS was #52. In 2017 it was #5. Since 2010, we've had a top-40 SoS in 7 of those 13 years, and a top-50 SoS in 11 of those 13 years. Earth shattering? No. But again, nowhere near among the weakest consistently out of 130ish FBS programs.

Talking about ranking among P5 teams, not all D1 teams.

At the start of this season, ISU's schedule was ranked the 8th most difficult among P5 teams and Iowa's was ranked the 3rd easiest. It's that way virtually every year.

Kirk isn't gonna flat out quit or retire, not when the university who fired his son owes him $42 million on the remainder of his contract. He's gonna make the university pay dearly, one way or another.

Yeah, gotta remember that Kirk gave 1 million to the hospital. He paid/pays it 100k over 10 year, IIRC and then talked about his annual payment to the hospital like they were two totally different things so he could get double credit. His donation was generous but it he can’t count it twice

Iowa has 1 win in the last 5 years against teams that finished the season ranked.

It really speaks to Kirk and his hold on the Iowa program that the interim AD is getting showered with kudos and praise for standing up and firing a guy who has been literally one of the worst in the entire country at his job the past few years. Such strength it took to do something that any AD in charge of a normal program would have done years ago.

Actually even if KF somehow pushed her out, doing what an AD would do in a normal program probably means she has improved her resume if she wants the job at a better school.

Before the season SOS is clickbait. B12 performed poorly in non conference as well so that already kinda throws out any preseason rankings. Iowa State got a tough draw though in b12 though no doubt about it. They missed UCF and Houston. Those would definitely be wins

But why stay somewhere he feels has neutered him after 20 years?

It's not like KF can't get another high profile & well paying head coaching job. It might also allow him to keep Brian on his staff as an offensive line coach or analyst.

I have a tough time believing he isn't financially secure at 68. Sure $42M is a lot of money, but at this point its just gravy for Kirk. His lifestyle probably doesn't change if he's making $4-$5M per year.

Because starting over at his age is never easy, and the man is stubborn, he has a contract that is going to pay him $42 million to coach for the next 6 years, then he is going to show them that he will coach for the next 6 years. Freerents is not the type of person to just throw in the towel and walk away, if they wanted that, the announcement yesterday would not have been made and he might have retired at the end of the season. I really doubt it, the AD knee capped him and good, but no way is he walking away, not in his character.

Getting off topic, but here's the current Sagarin ratings for all opponents of both teams.

The green are top 30 ("good") teams, and yellow ("bad") teams. Average in the middle. I don't think anyone is arguing about whose schedule is tougher.

ISU's schedule is rated 24 by Sagarin - that feels about right, since they haven't played Texas, KSU, or even KU yet. It's not top 10, but might get there.

Iowa is currently SOS of 43, that surprised me as high, but then they have 48,49,62, and 77 remaining so that will drag it back down.

It's a nice gesture, but over 10 years Kirk is giving that money to the hospital instead of the government in the form of taxes. In reality, that 1-million-dollar donation will end up costing him zero dollars out of his pocket. But what it did do is provide him with a ton of good will from the fanbase., which cost him nothing in return. Look the EIU coach, gave a million bucks to help sick children.

Remember this is the same coach that when EIU was hit with finical problems during Covid and all the coaches took pay cuts, he said he would also, only later do we find out he took no reduction at all.

I agree Iowa state has a tougher schedule no doubt. I just don't think Iowa's is as weak compared to all of college football as whats said. Georgia and Michigan two top 3 teams have both played weaker schedules and its November. Schedules across country have weakened with the larger conferences.
