F*CK IOWA

I haven't heard this scenario., What would have happened if CDJ had gone out at the 1 yard line? Would it have been reviewed?

After rewatching that video, 5 or 6 MN defenders slowed up in a group and then tried to get going again, honestly appeared shocked that dejean started returning the ball. That left arm circling around in the air , waving back and forth did have an impact.
Yep, correct. Takes away all the buzz of the “return” as the degree of difficultly was quite low given 6 players were instantly out of the play, by their own doing (i.e. slowing down, making basically 0 effort to actually tackle as they assumed play was about to be dead). I about puked when CW posted something about a comparison to Reggie Bush.

The refs didn't call forward progress on that play. That would have been defensible. The call on the field was down by contact which you could see on review was not the case. It should have been overturned with ISU possession.
@CYFanKC what was dumb about my post. They didn't whistle forward progress which wouldn't be reviewable they whistled down by contact.

Again, you don't want to go down this rabbit hole. It is murky I admit and hard to follow.

Basically, the allowable reviewable plays state that you can review "advancement of a fair catch", which they interpret as both valid and invalid fair catches and obviously what happened as it doesn't become illegal until Cooper advances the ball.

However, it is a 5 yard penalty for "advancement of a fair catch", and the replay official simply called it Invalid Fair Catch and dead ball at the place of where Cooper fielded the punt.

Why would they do that and not give Iowa a 5 yard penalty as they should have?

Because "advancement of a fair catch" isn't allowed in the penalized play list that can be created in the review booth. The Big 10 office used the reasoning of "advancement of a fair catch" as the reasoning why the play was open to review, but then didn't use that in their conclusion because they can't go back to review and create a penalty for that.
Are you sure that "scoring play" wasn't the reason that the play was reviewed since it was at the time of the review, you know, a scoring play?

The play he went over after the Iowa play was pretty interesting too, with two 15 yard penalties assessed on one play, because one was live ball and one was dead ball. Don't think I'd ever seen that before.
I'm not sure if it was two 15 yarders but ISU was assessed two penalties on one play in the Iowa State Iowa game a last year that got Iowa into field goal range for the potentially game winning FG but Iowa missed it.

I keep seeing references to “all scoring plays are reviewed” or even one comment about “they review all plays in the last 2 minutes.”

Folks, you’re confusing college and NFL rules. In the NFL, the booth reviews all scoring plays, turnovers, and anything in the last 2 minutes of each half. Coaches have a couple of challenges they can use at the risk of losing a time out if they’re wrong.

In college, all plays can be reviewed at any time. The replay official can buzz the on-field officials to stop the game and take a look at every play, if they think there’s a question about ball placement/dead ball/possession/catch/etc. Do they give scoring plays and turnovers extra attention? Most likely, yes, but they’re not limited to those. I think there’s still a coach’s challenge rule in college football, too, but that’s rarely used any more.

Come on. What in the hell would the NCAA national coordinator of officials know about the NCAA rules?
In fairness, TPTB told us that the officials go the call right (after they incorrectly did NOT stop play for a dead ball) for the "Phantom 3" at the Phog.

That’s one that still makes me scratch my head. “Yes, the officials should have stopped them from going downcourt and making that shot, but since they didn’t, guess there’s nothing we can do, no way to retroactively take those points off the board once KU scored them, play stands.“

Basically the same thing as “nothing in the rulebook says a dog can’t play basketball.”

So I take it Cade's check cleared and hes on board for another record breaking season. I assume that all the insurance/medical sales jobs are filled in eastern Iowa, so who can blame him?
If you knew more about them, you'd probably change careers for one of those medical sales jobs.

I bet they would still review it to make sure he didn't step OB, then assess the fair catch call, which btw, is still the correct call
Yep, as I said above, this notion that they only reviewed it because DeJean scored, and if he hadn’t made it to the end zone they wouldn’t have been able to, is false. College officials can review any play they think needs another look.

No Hok posters yet today. What is going on? My daily dose of "wisdom" is needed.
You have to give some of these Iowa fans time to finally get tired and wear down -- like you do with a spoiled brat who throws a hissy fit after being told he can't have a toy
