I’ve seen a lot of “That happens all the time and it’s never called.” I don’t agree with that. We see the pointing (which isn’t the invalid fair catch part), but even that is almost always followed by the returner just running away from the ball or at most just falling on it. I don’t recall seeing players wave their arm and then trying to return a punt.
The receiver waving his arms during a punt lets the ball bounce/roll and doesn’t pick up the ball almost every single time. Iowa didn’t get screwed… the proper call was eventually made on the fieldTo be a valid fair catch he has to wave his arm head high or higher, the kid looked like he was telling teammates to get away from the ball, thereby making it an invalid catch according to the rules and the officials. He still gets protection either way.
I have never seen something like that called in a game, where the player is signaling other players to stay away, he then picked up the ball and scored. I would guess if it does happen, the player picking up the ball is tackled, and then no one cares about the invalid fair catch signal, it only mattered here because he scored.
Just glad that EIU lost the game, but I did think they got screwed, which makes it even better.
Some people are pointing to a similar play last night during the North Carolina game. The receiver waved his arms, let the ball bounce, then picked up the ball and ran for 5 or so yards. The officials didn’t declare an invalid fair catch. However, I have not seen an angle in that play that shows whether the receiver was waving after the ball bounces or while the ball was still in the air. A receiver obviously can’t call fair catch after the ball bounces; therefore they can’t be called for an invalid fair catch after the ball bounces
