New Uniforms Revealed

The chrome helmet was the white helmet with the chrome "coating" - worn twice (if memory serves me), at the Independence Bowl & @ K-State in 2019 - obvs, the bowl game was our last game of the season & we wore the black helmet in the next game (bowl vs ND) in 2019 - so white was made chrome, then refurbed after the season - those chrome finishes can be kinda **** - I'm sure they're improving as a lot more teams are wearing them more often, but they can often crack & flake, leaving the original helmet color exposed - check out the top of Monty's helmet - they're a neat one-off - although they need to come up with a better color mixture - these look pink in the sun

Thanks for the insight and pic! Now that I know they spray painted them (the white helmets) it all makes more sense. Getting them sprayed for the last game of the season.

My next question is, who painted them? Our equipment staff, or was some painter locally hired to do the job? That is not an easy job. And yes, hopefully the paint is better now where it might not flake off so much. Yours is the first pic I've seen of it being so obvious (Montgomery's helmet).

Not many teams paint their helmets anymore, correct? I'm not sure about that but that's what I think. Notre Dame (and others) used to do it, but generally don't anymore. Like you've alluded to, anymore, teams that do it for a special look, might do it near the end of the season, as the durability of the paint, chipping, having to constantly retouch-up, is not as ideal as a factory color.

I'm willing to give up black for gold/yellow
That would be the logical choice. If that were to happen, I would then miss the black probably.

Having the gold helmet would definitely be more useful, and actually used.

Let's see, Campbell's thinking: "Keep the black or add Gold?"

They're nice but the USC jokes got annoying fast.
WRNL argues that actually USC copied us.

Fun article to read if people haven't already.

Also a good website if people ever want to look at old uniforms. I think the 1950s has some interesting looks.

Scrolling through that website it seems like we've used gold (yellow) helmets more or just as much as we've used red. At least from 1950s-1990

The eyes over the facemask is absolutely baller

This is great, but it is interesting that it isn't deemed afoul of NCAA rules:

ARTICLE 4. a. Helmets.
1. The helmet must be fitted with a facemask and a secured four- or six-point chin strap, all points of which must be secured whenever the ball is in play.
2. Helmets for all players of a team must be of the same color and design.

I think I saw that Iowa was rolling out Gold jerseys this weekend. Since they invented the color black, I think it's fair to say Gold is ours. Clearing some dues need collected.

The Academies have done helmets that each show off a different unit or whatever. Also we used to have the red/yellow helmets

I did think about the academies but I thought they had to get special permission for that. I think our red/yellow helmet thing preceded that NCAA rule since that would be specifically out since color is called out by name in the rule.

A unique Big Red decal for each position is incredible. Love it
Army and navy did something similar a few years back. Navy did it by different ships like the WBs were aircraft carriers. I think WRs were subs or destroyers.

Army did it for whatever division a player was going into I think.

All of the helmets are black, with red facemasks.

Decals aren't "design."

You wouldn't happen to be in favor of adding a yellow jersey, would you?
I think there's a right way to design & wear a yellow/gold ("athletic gold") jersey & a wrong way to do it

I think our gold jersey was okay on it's own, but we never wore it properly

The absence of white makes it difficult
