What Has Changed Since Ohio Loss?

I think they switched up the OL and they've been better.

Otherwise it's a young team that's getting confidence.

The OU game was just one week ago so it's not like they've come a LONG ways since then but they're playing much more forward and have some potential wins ahead of them.

They played ok against a very good team in OU, they are a playoff contender at this point. Obviously not so much the second half but there were flashes.

Also Ohio isn’t bad and it was at their place. OSU just beat KState, maybe not as bad as they seem?

The offense is absolutely not the same offense we saw against Ohio and Iowa. As others have pointed out, we have used formations and blocking schemes that we have not used before. For me, this seems like a (much needed) philosophy change. Before we looked like a team that wanted to be Iowa - that is to do a few things really well on offense, but zero creativity. Now it looks like OC CNS has the reigns to be creative and scheme against our weaknesses. On top of that, it's really clear we have a new OL coach who brings new ideas.

Every game is an overreaction, but my take is that the Ohio game was skewed a lot by the food poisoning. Oklahoma game was against a top 10 type team who was absolutely fired up to play against us - we were simply out matched.

All that said, I don't really understand what I'm seeing on defense. This is the worst stretch of tackling I've seen since CPR. Pass rush isn't great. Not sure what needs to change there.

Admittedly I've been pretty down and vocal about Campbell. At times just disgusted how he's screwed the pooch starting with 2021 season and all that talent. I fuc*ing HATE losing to the fuc*eyes. OK that aside...

Have we finally seen a change in him allowing the offense to open up more?
Did the Hot Seat comments light a fire?
Have practices been more intense?
Did Pollard have a sit down with him?

Obviously we are a better team, but not for any of the reason you cite. New coaches and young players. Plus Ohio is probably a pretty solid football team.

The goal should be a bowl, so we still need to keep getting better. There is still too much inconsistency on offense, defense & special teams:
  • Offense: Against TCU our run game was great, but pass offense not so much. We averaged less than 5ypa. Our pass offense seems to work best when we are completing throws between the hashes vs. sideline.
  • Defense. Teams are having success running the ball- especially getting wide. Also not getting enough pressure on the QB. Yesterday we had 2 sacks & 4 QBH.
  • Special Teams. Perkins punts have been inconsistent and were short against TCU. TCU had a long KO return.
The good thing is we are making some big plays that have made a difference: Long TD passes/runs, 8 interceptions, blocked punt & solid FG kicking.

We obviously tip the zone read option.....and it failed yesterday a lot with weird reliability and rare quarterback keep (1?).....but I think we ran it a lot less yesterday....had more play creativity. Good!!! That and 4 turnovers, a fortunate 4th down stop, and hurting their starting quarterback.
Bowl is the goal. stay healthy and a Mizzou or Nebraska bowl opponent could happen and the program could be re-trajectoried.....but you gotta win the bowl!!!

Simple. The team is young on offense and defense. Many of these players are gaining their first real experience this season. With all the youth, one would expect the team to play better as the season progresses. I also wonder how different the Ohio game would had been if not for the many players who had a stomach bug. I can’t imagine trying to play a football game while your stomach is in a knot

Young team with lots of kids that were supposed to be backup or see limited duty on the field this year. That all changed with the gambling issue and those kids were forced to be starters not backups. This is going to pay dividends for us the next two years, but we have to continue to improve each and every game.

No clue what the early season problems are, when we had everyone returning a couple of years ago we hit very little in the spring, and that did not help us one bit. Next two games are the most important of the season, win both we can get to 7 wins, split and we are still fine, lose both and we are looking at maybe 1 more win the rest of the season.

im not sure the Ohio loss on the road was all that horrible. Similar to TT's road loss to Wyoming in ot.

not sure ISU or TT would win a road rematch, bc those teams are actually good.

Every year sans last and possibly the year before, the team has constantly improved all year. That's good coaching. Some just can't see it because they ignore the adversity facing most college teams that can't just load up on 5 stars or buy an experienced power 5 defense like Oklahoma. Anyone who truly believed Campbell was on any kind of hot seat except by the social media mob is delusional. We've beaten both the teams in the Big 12 championship game last year and lost to Oklahoma. Not bad. Many winnable games on the horizon but the margin for error is small. Just hoping for continued improvement in all the young players.

The coaching staff took off Rocco's floaties. It sounds like Rocco did not have a good fall camp, and they were hesitant to let him sling it. But he's elevated his performance when it matters, and his awareness has been off the charts for a backup, 3-star redshirt freshman.

The playcalling opened up, the defenses have to respect the pass, the OL is improving, and we're giving ourselves a chance to win the game as opposed to simply trying to not lose. That's obviously an oversimplification, but that's what I've seen.

Who knows how much of the team had a virus at Ohio.
I'm probably not going to use that one as a turning point.
Yeah, after that game I was pretty upset, especially with play calling. But as you said, we don't know how limited the team was. In terms of the passing game especially, with the benefit of hindsight, we saw Becht play really well in the second half. However, could anyone reasonably expect that from a QB who spent halftime throwing up? If I'm a coach going into that game, I'm probably going to try to avoid putting the game entirely on that guy's shoulders, even if he's still the best option.

Honestly…. not much has changed. We have opened up the offense slightly, but CMC would never admit it.

The OL has improved slightly too with changes in personnel. Brendan Black starting has brought an “angry” attitude to the OL. He looks like he lives to hit people, and we’ve needed that.

Defense has gotten worse in tackling though and kick offs and punting are atrocious.

Turnovers are everything. Had TCU not thrown the ball right to us 4 times last night…. we definitely lose and possibly get blown out. We didn’t play that great IMO. And we couldn’t stop them at all without those INT’s.

So although it feels like we’ve turned some kind of corner…. I’m not ready to say that yet. We were running it well in the 2nd half, but it looked to me like TCU’s defense was kinda giving up when they got down a few scores.

I hope we have turned a corner, but we got blown out just last week. I’m not sure one okay game means that much…. but I sure hope so!!

We literally got blown out last week. We’re on a 1 game winning streak.

To one of the best teams in college football. It's a throw away when discussing the status of Iowa State. We're playing a different game.

I offered my opinion on why we've seen improvement since losing to Ohio, which is the point of the thread. What are you doing?
