49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

It’s insane to me that some people were calling for them to trade for Cousins last night. By some people I mean idiot Gottlieb and is trolls.

1.) With Cousins price tag they couldn’t afford half of the excellent cast around Purdy. I realize this is the last year of Cousins’ deal, but if you trade for him what do you do at QB next year? Cause you can’t resign him and keep all these other players.

2.) Cousins has pretty freakin good weapons too (Jefferson, prime Thielen, Addison, Cook before this year, did he play with Diggs?) and still has never won a playoff game, had the 4th-most turnovers of any QB in 2022, has roughly half the TO/turnover ratio that Purdy has, and has a 13-basis point worse QBR than Purdy. Even if you think he’s a better QB than Purdy (which I don’t), he doesn’t objectively manage the game better then Purdy and wouldn’t give SF a better chance to win.

I’ll also say McCaffrey was a huge addition to SF. Huge, no doubt. But Deebo, Kittle, Aiyuk, the OL, Bosa, Greenlaw, etc were all still there with Lance and Jimmy G at the helm. And they were 3-4 before Brock took over. They lost to my freakin Broncos and the Bears for God sakes. So he’s also objectively doing more with almost all the same weapons than other starting QBs have done
Cousin has won a playoff game... on the road against the Saints.

He's an attorney who started a popular NFL blog called Pro Football Talk a while back and now he's basically a talking head on the NFL.

You have these talking heads everywhere who want to pretend they're experts on football who refuse to admit they got it wrong on Purdy and instead continue to double down on their bad takes, exponentially increasing how much they are fools.

I’d have to think if Brock continues his performance throughout this year, they’ll renegotiate his contract in the offseason.
No they won't. That's the beauty of the rookie salary cap. You spend that money now on other needs. Purdy's time will come. They'll try and get it done the year before he becomes a free agent.

They can negotiate for a longer contract after next year. So Brock needs to stay healthy this year and next for sure.

This. As soon as the are able to renegotiate and extend him they will, assuming he is still playing at this level. But the rules of the CBA don’t allow them to extend rookie contracts until after the third year.

Based on performance there is no point in Kirk Cousins career where he has played better than Brock Purdy’s first 11 games and it’s not close. Gottlieb suggesting that the 49ers pay $29 million/yr more for a lesser QB is an all time worst take.
They tried that. His name is Jimmy Garoppolo. He threw 3 INTs last night in primetime. Awful take.

There are better QBs for sure, but the amount of flexibility afforded by having that level of performance on an exceptionally cheap rookie contract is a dream scenario for a GM. Purdy still isn't the multi-season proven commodity that someone like Justin Herbert is. The sample size is growing but still small. But that Herbert contract really cuts down the piece they can put around him in LA. Balancing cost and value is what makes and breaks GMs.

Haven't read all posts, but, I can say as a Vikings fan that's watched all of Cousins' games here. There is no way that any sane FB person would want Cousins to lead their team... and, no way that SF would want him over what Brock has been delivering. While Cousins has a stronger arm and much more experience, Brock has more moxie & leadership in his little pinkie than Cousins entirely has. Brock also has pocket sense/feel, and Cousins has absolutely none of that.

Cousins is a great guy - so is Brock - but there's a reason Cousins stacks up nice stats but is empty when it matters. He has no leadership ability, no pocket sense, and is frozen by stressful situations - watch his games and see. Yesterday's game against LAC showed multiple examples of this, not just the end of the game, which is another signature moment for him & what he is.

The end of game yesterday was really KOC's fault. Don't try to talk in the earpiece of your QB for a new play with the clock running and under 35 seconds to play. In fact, KOC should had told Cousins before the 4th down play that the plan is to spike the ball once they convert the 4th down.
Cousins is the easy target... the true fault lies with KOC

These are the #15-19 paid QBs per year. If Brock is in the range of QB 10-20, which seems plausible, a pay raise/grade of $30-35M/ year would be pretty reasonable on both sides. The next 5 on the list would be Carr, Rodgers, Jones, Prescott, and Stafford. I'd say a very legitimate argument can be made that Purdy is playing at their level or better and their salaries range from $37M - $40M. I know Purdy is the type of player that probably wouldn't be greedy with his ask and that he knows it's better to keep the talent around him to elevate everyone's play. I think given his age and what he's shown, that $30-38M isn't out of question.

Oh, that one's definitely on KOC as well. But, how can you absolve Cousins? How many years has he been in the league? He doesn't have the sense to spike a ball in that situation? He even acknowledged afterwards that he could have done that - has license to do so... great example of what Kirk is as a QB - a follower, not a leader.

Kirk apologists have a long list of reasons why it's never his fault - he's been let down by his coaches, his OL, his WRs, his RB, his D, his... at some point, as the common factor, you have to see that Kirk is who he is - very good when things go as the coach called/planned; a complete zombie/basket-case when they don't.

Good info. But Brock cannot negotiate an extension until the end of next year at the earliest, I believe. If he plays like he has for another 1.75 seasons - he won't have to worry about getting paid.

He explained it in his post game comments. He didn't spike it because KOC was telling him a new play. There is a chain of command... he rarely will do his own thing because he is not the official play caller. If your boss is telling you to do one thing. do you go against him/her to do your own thing?

Yes, QB's will often audible. But that's only because they have another play in their pocketbook where the QB has the leverage to audible to the play based on the coverage they are seeing.

This is first and foremost KOC's fault. They knew if they made the first down, the player would be short of the end zone and in the field of play. He should had alerted Cousins to spike the ball when they made the first down before the fourth down play. Cousins is the scapegoat here

Oh I know, I was just curious as to where he may fall based on his age range, the market and where he stands up against other guys. Either way, pretty cool to follow. It should be much better than his $900K or whatever he is currently getting.

I also have to say I got ballsacked on twitter by quickly scrolling through and seeing "Brock is making $900K and currently living in a Holiday Inn. He was supposed to build a house but something in the construction went wrong." I didn't look at who posted it initially. Haha

Hey, Cyhig, appears we'll have to agree to disagree on Cousins co-owning this with KOC. I'd note that KOC didn't force the pass that ensued... I'm not yet sold on KOC, either. Seems a bit too much a player's coach. Maybe he'll get his legs, we shall see. Everything went the Vikings way last year; things are evening out now. Going to see what he's made of. GM has even more to prove.

Back to Brock - it's great to see how things are going. SF looks like one of the clear SB faves.
