National Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw says FG in Ohio game was "no good"

Just wanted to set the record straight because this "controversy" has taken a life of it's own. A station in Cleveland (better known in Ohio as the "Mistake on the Lake") broadcast the video of the FG from the angle in front that makes it look good. And, then without question, says "Ohio got a break on a bad call."
Nobody here has brought it up in a week. take it up with the Cleveland radio station.

This hasn't been an issue with ISU fans. I'm not sure why you're coming here and bringing it up. Congrats on the win. It was one of the most embarrassing losses for ISU in my 50 years as a fan.

Nice first post.

Look at the video from behind the official, which he actually pauses at one point. That's a much better angle than the one from the front that caused all the controversy. It is fairly close to the angle that the official would have. It would appear from this angle that the ball is, indeed, right above the upright extended, which by rule, means it's no good. These were, by the way, B12 officials, not MAC officials. This was no "four yard line safety" which we had called against us a few years ago! ;-)
I think this may legitimately be the first time I’ve ever heard someone use Big 12 refs as a reason the call must have been right.

I just thought to bring closer on the matter, you folks would be interested to know that Steve Shaw, the national coordinator of officials, has reviewed the "controversial" FG attempt against OHIO and concluded that the officials were correct. It was no good.

You can see his analysis here (starting at the 4:42 mark):

I'll be rooting for you guys for the rest of the season. Nice seeing you take down Okie State on Saturday.
If the premise is wrong, the conclusion is wrong. I still contend the mere 'steps' of the official (even on the 'their' replay) will change the perspective of the ball. I think their pre-snap location rules should change to have them align from where the kick is (similar to punting). Let's look at this another way to make my point. It's the same science as in billiards. Do the rules compensate from the hashmarks vs the center of the field. They 'should' because the angle makes the difference between the posts smaller. College posts are commonly 5 9/16" diameter. Kicking from the hashmark, that takes (roughly) 2" off the 7" wide football. That's roughly 25% of the width. IMO, that's a lot. Certainly worth the simple rule change to align the refs.

That said, I'm surprised it's got to pass cleanly 'between' the uprights when the kick is higher than the upright. However, I'm not sure how they can set up the rule otherwise.

Ohio fan I know you guys had your birthday and beat a big bad power 5 school last week. Congratulations. I hate to break it to you but noone here gives a shat about the fg. We played probably our worst game in a decade and whether the fg was good or not we all know we didn't deserve to win that game. We all talked about the fg for about 5 mins on Monday morning. Just gtfoh and be thankful a big 12 school for some reason agreed to come to Athens, ohio.
