49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

That's insanely fast. This kid might be OK.
That's what I was thinking last night. For that to happen, he has to read the defense well, know where everyone is going to be, and then react extremely quickly. He's clearly putting time in on the mental side of the game and learning that offense.

He is not a game manager. He is a very good NFL QB on a damn good team. He is making great throws, making the right decisions quickly and largely throwing with accuracy. He really cleaned up his mechanics prior to the draft and it shows. Of course his coach and teammates have a big influence on his success, just like every QB.
He obviously fell into a really good spot whereas most rookie QB's that end up starting don't but we've also seen him beat out 5 other QB's for that job. NFL coaches don't do that because it's a feel good story, he's the starter because he earned it.

If you like to listen to discussion on Brock, the Locked on 49ers podcast was good today. Towards the end they were talking about how they thought Brock and some other players (Kittle) are better NFL players than college players due to the coaching staff. The sideline shots show a lot of Griese and Brock.

Both can be true.

It can be true he fell into a great spot with a great team with a coach who has a great offensive mind.

It can also be true that he worked his ass off and won the starting job.

Lynch mentioned that Griese loved Purdy coming out of college and pushed San Fran to draft him.

Some Qbs and their coaches belong together. Mahomes and Reid, Wilson and the one in Seattle, Brady and Billicheck, etc Brock and Shanahan hopefully can be one of those.
Agree. I think Purdy is in the perfect offensive system for his skills. A Shanahan offense needs a smart QB who can ensure players are lined up/spaced properly pre-snap, quickly read the defense, and get the ball out quickly into the hands of playmakers where they have a chance to run after the catch.

This scheme doesn't require a lot of deep throws, but a lot of passes under 10 yards in the air. Purdy has the capability to make the occasional deep pass (see the Samuel TD pass), but it's not something they rely on like many other teams

wait wait wait, I keep hearing we need to go deep all the time. Are you telling me a team doesn't have to throw deep all the time to be successful?

I think Purdy has a few really elite skills - anticipation, footwork, little movements in the pocket to make space, and accurate throwing. Those things wouldn't go away if he were on another team. He might not look as good with lesser talent, but I think he would look better than many starters if he swapped places with them (e.g., he would look better than Fields does on the Bears).

I assume that's a temporary thing? I love Purdy and all and his start is nothing short of amazing, but HoF worthy? I feel like HoF items should have longevity, not a Guiness Book of Records kind of thing.
He absolutely should be in the Hall of Fame permanently for his situation. Whether he gets in as a member of the Hall of Fame will take significantly longer but his story absolutely should be in there forever.

At least for the baseball hall of fame the majority of the entity is a museum of the history. Members of the Hall of Fame is frankly a minor aspect of it.

I think there are a few things that make Purdy a target for doubters. You could use any of these as evidence either way in a rational discussion.

1 - He fits perfectly into the scheme he's playing in so it's hard to tell how much he's managing vs the team putting him in the right position to be successful.

2 - They have a lot of offensive weapons that can bail him out.

3 - He's had a ton of missed picks over the 8 games and people still count those against him.

4 - He doesn't have the biggest arm.

5 - He doesn't have the physical traits or play style you would typically associate with a star QB.

In the end, he's managing the game very well, making some good reads, and doing enough to keep their offense moving. He's never going to look like the most natural QB and he'll have some games where he probably doesn't look like he belongs, but he did a lot last night against 87% blitz rate to show he can still be successful even under a ton of pressure.
