Has the Rot Started to Set In?

No, we all know what we hear. But that is usually not what we get.
We had a bummer of a year with an NFL equipped team two years ago. Last year was a disaster with a team that always found new ways to lose. This year? Too early to tell. One game doesn’t make a season. Let’s ask again after homecoming. If the team is 1-4 then it’s very bad. 2-3…bad with little hope in conference. Above that…there is life and we are seeing some improvement.
No, it really isn't a big stretch at all. Repeatedly breaking rules that you know will likely get you ineligible for a significant stretch of games and possibly kicked off the team indicates to me that you don't very highly value the team or the need for character that the coach is trying to create. That isn't "bought in" in any way that I can see.
The amount of the bets or the means used to place the bets isn't really the issue. The issue is repeatedly doing something that could be (and ultimately was) seriously detrimental to the team, despite numerous and repeated warning from the coaching staff not to do that activity.
I don't think they were fixing games, What I am concerned about is the defiance of the coaching staff and disregard for the good of the team in a program that preaches culture and character. Somewhere there was a big disconnect between what the coach was teaching and what was going on. Having been in a similar situation, I am also concerned about the animosity that such activity creates in the team environment, and how that plays itself out in how the team functions, particularly when the team leaders are involved in the defiance.
Apples and oranges. Underage drinking usually carries a game or two suspension (if any suspension at all), doesn't involve a DCI criminal investigation, and doesn't nationally negatively portray/embarrass the program. The consequences to both the individual and team for underage gambling are significantly worse than for underage drinking/toking.
When a rule with serious consequences is broken a couple of times, I'll agree it is a stupid mistake. Stop the behavior and move on. When that rule is broken hundreds of times (or over a thousand times in the case of Brock) and over an extended period of time, despite continual warning against the activity, it's beyond a silly mistake. It's willful defiance and shows lack of respect for the program and those running the program. That's not good. A program will fail if there is no respect for the coaches and the program itself.

I’ve been going to games since Earle Bruce was coaching, so I guess I’m not going to be to worked up. At least people have stopped touting Matt as a potential candidate for every job opening.
If by "rot" you mean people just being meh about losing, and just sort of in acceptance and excuse mode about it.... yes... just read all the threads on this site. Nobody cares anymore. Everyone has already accepted the loss on Saturday... and basically are saying they never expected us to win anyway... so it's no big deal.
I didn't have a strong feeling either way really. I said prior to the game ISU was being overestimated and Iowa underestimated based on week 1. Was hoping ISU would come out and get to it.
Needed to be crisper in the approach and more fundamentally sound. That's been my issue with CMC for years and I've stated as such but winning seasons are fine as far as I'm concerned.
I'm not into the 'had a chance to take the next step after the Fiesta Bowl' because I understand that's not how that works.
Are you going to be like this for any other similar losses?
And if we do lose to Ohio?
Will everyone be ticked off in the hours following the game, like they were after the Iowa game... but then a day or two later be all fine with it, like after the Iowa game?
Do you think fans should be internet outraged 3 days later?
No unless you have nothing else to hang onto in your life. Its a game none of us have any control over.
I’m ok with losing to Iowa, considering losing X and all the guys to the gambling fiasco. What I have a problem with is the details that are missing on offense and special teams. How many times in the past couple of seasons have you asked yourself, “do they even practice that?” Examples would be Perkins last year taking 3 steps in his own endzone to punt against Iowa, fair catching every punt return, inability to run a 2 minute offense, inability to pick up 3rd or 4th and 1’s. What is that other than negligence? We used to be creative, we used to run wildcat, we used to run trick plays. What happened? We now are asking our offense to convert 5 first downs on a drive to score. It’s really hard to score without chunk plays and honestly it’s hard to watch. I really hope we improve because we have dudes on defense that deserve better than a two or three win season.

Is this an age of fan thing?
Are the doom and gloom fans all in their 20s and 30s and for their whole lives only known good to pretty good football at Iowa State and even the thought of a couple down years, where the team is still very competitive, is a disaster?
Are the JFC we’re Iowa state, just have some patience crowd from an older generation that had to live through the 80s and 90s?
Is is flipped? Have the older fans finally got a taste of good football and are hyper-sensitive to letting it fall back to something less than mediocrity?
Has the young crowd had enough success that they are ok riding out a few bad years mixed in with the good, because they don’t have the same scar tissue as the old fans?
I’m content. I have loved the highest highs of the program and have also sat in Lincoln getting beat seventy-something to seven.
So rot? No. Rut? Likely. Let’s just dig this thing out of the rut and keep on truckin.

Just went and listened to CMC's presser today. So many lies, wow.
Someone asked him about the run game against Iowa... CMC said he was pretty happy with it, since we averaged 4-5 yds per carry. Uh wut? It was 2.8 Matt.
He actually thinks we're also averaging about 5 yds per carry on the season too... but it's 3.8. The run game is not good at all Matt, answer the question.
You know whoever asked the question knew we only averaged 2.8 per carry against Iowa, but when Matt says it was 4-5.... why not correct him? Afraid? Darn right they are. It's almost all softballs.

If you are from the 80s or 90s, you should know where this is heading if it doesn't get turned around fast...
Personally it was more about the things we did in the loss than the loss itself. On the big running play a freshman linebacker did a freshman thing, and that was something I thought Iowa might be able to take advantage of. On the pick 6 I was more mad at the staff than I was at Becht. Yes he stared down the receiver, but that's a play/route that shouldn't even be in the playbook. Talk about putting a young QB in a position to fail.
On the overall the offensive playcalling and the terrible game management are worrisome. The time management on the scoring drive is pretty indefensible and has been a constant issue under Campbell's watch. As for the offense, the reason you move on from Manning is to get away from the bad play design, horrendous protection schemes, and poor play calling sequences of the past. I saw a lot of Manning in that game on Saturday and was not impressed.
I graduated from ISU in '91... I've lived through a TON of horrible football years.
And like the post above... us veterans know exactly where this is headed if not turned around. Matt has undoubtedly gotten better talent through the doors, and they physically look like Big 12 players... but I don't think we're getting anywhere near the results we should be getting with the players we have.
It felt like Saturday we had no desire to go out and win the game... just play ULTRA conservative football and hope we don't screw up... which has the reverse affect IMO... and you play tight and you do screw up. Let the players play and have fun playing the game. Put it all on the line and go down fighting every game. Maybe throw more than 1 or 2 passes deeper than 10 yds?
