Hype Train Reminder and '23 Projections

My biggest reason for optimism is how close the games were last year. As many have said there were many games that could have been won with a break here or there. If we would have been getting smashed every week my concerns for the future of the program would have been huge.

Here’s to hoping that the coaching changes that were made lead to better outcomes

Yep. Previous years we were skating by in close games, now that we finally kept drawing the short straw in these games, the staff was forced to deal with the issues. And I think they have/will.

I expect this team to have less red zone penalities and dumb mistakes.

Considering we likely have our returning starter at qb and rb out. I’m not sure I’d call it even. Those have the potential to be absolutely huge losses. However if whomever starts in their places are the next Brock Purdy and Breece Hall well….
Im not sure if it’s even or not I just personally believe them losing their guys on defense hurts them more because I don’t believe their offense will be that good again. Definitely better than last year though (which is such a low bar).

Ehh, until we see what we have in Becht and Kohl in a game I think the loss of a starting QB with a year of experience and a healthy Brock hurts more. Iowa always has a good secondary so I don't know how much it really hurts. I mean we lost to Iowa in 2019 when they were starting like a 5th string corner and a walk on at safety.

Yeah that’s true. I guess my logic is that our defense is going to be able to stop most offenses and shouldn’t have a problem with Iowa’s. Rocco playing against a thinned secondary is better than him playing against the two starters.

But I understand what you’re saying too.

Pull a Paul Rhoads special and start random players with no film on them.

Then 3 weeks later when teams have them figured out, bring out the 'the QB got worse!' talk.

Rinse and repeat.

I AM JUST GOING TO LEAVE THIS STAT HERE!!!!

If we made a field goal for every missed field goal under 42 yards*, Turnover (and turnover on downs) in the redzone.....

We would have ended the season: 7-4-1

That is with an ABYSMAL line and an offensive coordinator who felt like he was self-sabotaging.

Those losses include the OU and KSU games, where our offense just could not get out of its own way.

*A 42 yard field goal should be very makeable for a P5 level kicker

The problem with this stat is you can’t just take away our mistakes but not take any of the opponents mistakes away.

Ran across this vintage MAD comic and it reminded me of CF. This was back when people didn't have access to social media to communally freak-out and freaking out was mostly with family and friends if not at a game itself.

Just a reminder - don't overreact to signs of progress or signs of a step back. UNI was a good game, Iowa was not. Ohio should be a good game, but then things get tough for such a young, under-developed team. Keep expectations in check and remember - for better or worse - this is a huge rebuilding year, unfortunately.

This is a good reminder! Went back and saw some reactions/predictions from last season after the Cyhawk game. Someone predicted we'd start 6-0. And now the wheels are falling off and were gonna win 3 games lol still too early to tell for this year

I was able to do that before the season, and I haven’t changed my outlook as 4-8 as the CEILING. The problem is the number of posts I’m seeing like “I think we’re still going 6-6!”. My recommendation is to watch some other football besides Iowa and ISU because we look like a JV team compared even to our mediocre peers.

Man, have you watched much other football? Especially the B12 this year? We dont look that mediocre truthfully...also, we completely rebuilt our offense this off season both with players and coaches. 2 games is too small a sample size. We may very well only win 4 games. But, as the season goes on, I believe you will see improvement, even if it doesnt necessarily show in the win column

Can’t wait. Lol. What are we even doing here?

I figured 3 wins at the beginning of the year, I still think 3 is about right. Prob not worse than that.
