WBB: 2023-24 schedule

Reserved seating against Oral Roberts two years ago was $10. But no seat backs in the current arena. I’m expecting the same for this season. When they get the Anderson Arena built on campus, Tommie fans are going to be living right!

Iowa State plays AT St. Thomas on wed, nov.29. Tommie schedule dropped today. The current St. Thomas arena is tiny. ( for that reason I’ll plan early for my tickets). While this is a terrible game for ISU rpi type rankings…. thank you Cyclones!!! for helping out the Tommies as they seek to elevate their program in their Div 1 transition.
Saint Thomas was desperate to connect with D-1 competition and with us going to their tiny arena seems we must have had some incentive. I suspect it is that Bill has a soft spot for the Saint Thomas head WBB Coach Ruth Sinn who has 500 wins. I once thought Sinn could replace Bill, though now she isn't a hot young coach. Tommies have only one player from Grimes, Iowa on the roster Emma Miner. So that isn't the connection.

Often games like this are set up so players from outside Iowa can play a "home game" (like the Bridget Carleton game). Not sure who this would be for, though. Donarski (arranged before her transfer)? LaCrosse is only slightly closer to the Twin Cities than Ames. Diew is originally from Marshall, MN before she moved to Sioux City -- U of South Dakota (Sioux Falls) would make more sense for her.

In both cases, Ames is close enough to home that ISU probably wouldn't set up a special game. Nobody else on the roster this year or last is from anywhere closer to St. Paul than those two.

It also could be a trade game - maybe a two for one instead of buying a game like the football team did with Ohio Univ.

Been years since we've played in Minnesota and we haven't scored a Minnesota HS recruit since Johnson and Scott in 2017** and we are the sole Big 12 school in this recruiting region. If we are looking to some exposure in MN I'd prefer we play the Gophers like we used to on occasion but I am guessing that is not in the cards so this will do. Gophers have hired a coach with a strong regional recruiting background and if I were her I'd not want to give us a free "exhibition" in Williams. Still, it'll be fun for us locals here. Unless we make a splash in the NCAA we aren't gong to get much TV time or press up here, it's Big Ten country more so than ever with their network reach and a solid top tier of WBB in their league.

** If I missed anyone I am sure to be corrected! Not counting Diew, she is a transfer and while "regional" probably played a part it is not MN HS recruiting.

Maybe something to that as I noted they are playing Wisconsin in a home and home. And they are in the Summit League as a Div 1 team. Don't see this as much different than going to Fargo to play in front of 200 people a few years back except this is closer and better PR. We play a Summit pretty much every year now.

This is also a year where we have 2 of 3 in-state games at home, so it makes sense to add a second road game.

Known games so far:

11/12: @ Drake
11/24: vs. Vanderbilt @ South Point Shootout (Las Vegas, NV)
11/25: vs. Syracuse @ South Point Shootout (Las Vegas, NV)
11/29: @ St. Thomas
12/3: vs. UNC-Wilmington
12/17: vs. Troy
12/20: vs. UNI

Iowa @ ISU date TBD. Maybe around 12/10?

With our youthful team maybe an upstart like St. Thomas is a good experience too like the summer Euro gig.

History (women Wednesday, men Thursday) would put that game on Wed 12/6.
Don't forget Butler on November 6.

We've already got 9 games figured out before the schedule has even released. Let's try and find those last 2-3 games. Will probably be at least one MEAC/SWAC school in there.

I had forgotten there was schedule discussion in the 23-24 season thread, where that was mentioned.

Non-conference games sorted by 22-23 NET Ranking

Iowa 6
(Iowa State 15)
Drake 51
Syracuse 54
UNI 64
Vanderbilt 99
Butler 125
Troy 139
NDSU 191
St. Thomas 234
Southern 260
UNCW 317

Truman State was decent last season (20-10) and they return a fair number of contributors, although their best player is now on our roster. They played Creighton and Notre Dame in exhibitions last season and lost very badly (40+ margin) in both games, with Belanger leading them in scoring in both games.

Have some more info on the Wednesday November 29th game versus University of St. Thomas. Been working through ISUAA and St. Thomas to set up something for the game. Single game tickets will go on sale in October. They will be providing me a promo code for the ISU alumni for $5 tickets. :) These will be general admission, same as their season tickets. For $5 I'll probably buy a bunch and treat some of the my friends, think my Gopher peeps might enjoy this game to.

Also a high probability we will set up a pre-game meet up, maybe at Tiffany Sports Bar in St. Paul. We will be promoting this via email blast and Facebook here in the Twin Cities to our local alumni and will share all of that with you when the time comes.

I am considering hitting the game with the wife (thinking of making it some enchanted weekday getaway). Updates on how, and where, the tickets are discounted for Iowa State Fans/Alums work, parking, meet-ups, etc.

What's good about this game is that it is not during Thanksgiving week but near enough to my birthday for an excuse.

I'll keep everyone posted here as we get this planned out. I'll have to check myself on what parking is these days. Haven't been on campus there since an ex got her masters there.
