It's a bit concerning when you can see the moisture in the sky this morning. It's not even really fog. It's just that "just got out of the shower and your mirror is completely fogged over" feeling.

It's hard to believe that it's only been over 100 in Des Moines once in the last 5 years.

2011 had 11 days above 100
1988 10
1934 31!!!

Streaks are also interesting

I believe 2012 had the 11 days above 100.

And the once in 5 years in Des Moines really isn't surprising. Things go in cycles.

In the 60's it was above 100 just twice the entire decade. Two days! Once in 64' and once in 66'. In the 70's only 1974 and 1977 had days over 100. That's 20 summers with only 4 having days hit the century mark.

Then came the 80's with some of the hottest summers since the 30's. Patterns come.........patterns go.

Went out to garden at 6:45 am. Glasses kept fogging up long after I had left air conditioning. Very humid

My son played baseball in Des Moines in the state tournament in2012. The temp in the dugout during one of the games was like 102-105. He said at least one game had the time changed because of the temp. Does that sound right?

Likely. We got married in July 2012 and it was incredibly hot that day with temps over 100.

I was training for Madison Ironman in 2012. I had to move my workout runs to night runs and bike workouts to early morning starts, like 4AM. I was worried that temps would be high for the Triathlon but turned out to have mid 70s that day. GREAT temps for a race.

Just awful today. Waited till sun was basically down to mow the yard, but it was literally just too hot and suffocating out. And I was on a rider at that. Mowed just the side yard and said **** it.

You want something crazy… lower that baseline temp to 95 degrees and watch the jaws drop. I was frankly a little shocked to see last year didn’t have more 100+ degree days.

I lowered it to 95 and not really getting the jaw dropping experience. What am I missing?

2017-2022 6.2 average
2011-2016 11.6
2005-2010 3
1999-2004 3.8
1993-1998 2.8
1987-1992 18.6
1981-1986 9.6
1975-1980 8.8
1969-1974 6.2

7.84 average over this time frame

BTW, I'm not denying global climate change, I'm just pointing out that in the Des Moines area, we've seen very little change in my lifetime. If you asked the average Joe walking down the street, they would tell you that we've had a lot more extreme tempatures.
