Small concern about Jack Trice logo usage - UPDATE: Gerry Vaughn

That logo was originally a secondary during the "Blue Period." It was essentially the primary bird-in-a-blender logo with the "ISU" removed to only leave Cy fisting his way out of a tornado.

When the I-State become the primary, this logo was recolored to remove the blue and set to be the "main" secondary logo. I really wish they would have kept this one as the main secondary.

I wonder what that would look like if you took out the darker shade of cardinal and made it black instead of darker red. I would imagine something like that would be a Campbell favorite.

Instead, we ended up with Sex Offender Cy, who nobody seems to like.

Or worse.

Agree that they should have gone with non-blue fisting Cy as secondary over sex offender Cy. I don't know if I have ever owned any ISU gear with that logo, or really ever seen it except for the cheap crap they sell at Hy-Vee. Never owned any bugle apparel either, nor will I.

I actually like "sex offender Cy" as you call it. It's more casual(?) than the I-State. It's the gf's fave...

Hard pass on fisting Cy. But to each their own...

Funny story - gf bought me some ISU ceramic coasters one day - two sets because they were on clearance! She was so happy to have done a nice surprise for me.
Bugles. ugh

That logo isn't an intellectual property of Jack Trice. It's simply the logo the school wore at the time he played.

The more it's used, the better, IMO. It keeps his story and legacy front of mind, and pays homage to a critical piece of ISU history.

The historical record is a bit mixed actually. Those specific jerseys in 1923, not a logo. I've noted before that Iowa had the exact same jersey design when they played Minnesota later in 1923. Sporting goods catalogs offered several different types, including ovals.

HOWEVER!

Some teams made their own customized friction stripe patterns. Those could be considered a purposeful brand identity. Texas Tech made theirs into a double T. Oklahoma did an "O" design. Nebraska did a "N" shape. Another school did a bizarre design that I can only describe as polka dots meet jelly beans.

I agree. Lots of ISU players whose names we don't know wore those uniforms. It makes a GREAt secondary logo that links to Trice and to Iowa State history and tradition. It should remain on our uniforms and be promoted as part of ISU's identity.

Yeah. There are many other great stories on those teams.

____

I think ISU is still trying to feel their way with the Trice logo. Tricky, because as some of you have noted, it was a generic thing. BUT! Great to see it though. Really cool to see that giant logo looking down on the stadium.

I can think of some examples where they didn't want to tie it to Jack as a person, but other times ISU is clearly connecting Jack Trice as a person to the NEW "vintage logo" intellectual property. The legalities can quickly get into the weeds there.

I mean, right now Cy's Locker Room is promoting the AMES and five bar logo gear with the JACK TRICE 100 anniversary imagery. But the ISU bookstore is full of five bar gear with no reference made to Jack whatsoever.

That's why I thought ISU would benefit from some guardrails a bit here. Everyone here knows that I'm one of Jack's biggest boosters and I want his story spread all over the place.

I feel being against it for some kind of moral squeamishness is odd. 70% of americans drink, and of those that dont drink most arent abstaining for any kind of moral reason (they simply may not like the taste/effects, don't drink for health concerns, or have found they are unable to use in moderation). Treating it as some kind of inherent moral negative that other things shouldn't be associated with is a pretty fringe belief.

Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not talking about the usage of alcohol itself. Alcohol is an accepted part of society and it should be. Was simply using the beer can design as a launching point for my thoughts - advocating for a more precise application of his legacy.

ISU licensing is very strict on how their current logo can appear with certain applications. With the Trice logo, are there any merchandise categories that should be discouraged - given the importance of his story?

I think ultimately, I would like to see some of that revenue flowing back into charitable programs. His story is tragic. How can we use the revenue created by Trice logo merchandise to improve society and promote his legacy?

It is the intellectual property of Iowa State University.

And this is why the puking emoji is also a reaction.:nausea::puke:. That ******* monstrosity should be blended to oblivion and never seen again.

It’s literally the only ISU logo that I dislike. I will buy merch with any of the others, but navy is not an ISU color.

Open letter time!

Today I came across this very cool beer can design:

I'm a bit uneasy to see Jack's tragic legacy on every single piece of merchandise out there, including the traditional "vice" of alcohol. I think the logo would benefit from some guardrails with a clear, tangible benefit that honors his story. IMO it should be a honor to earn - like the patch on the football uniforms. Not something to create revenue.

Because no one asked me, I will share some suggested steps:

1.) ISU licensing should create a THIRD royalty tier (the highest) for the Trice logo.

2.) All (most?) of that revenue should go towards scholarships and community programs that benefit those in need.

3.) Logo should only appear on certain merchandise categories. Sadly this means no DraftKings x Trice collab.

4.) Every merch item should be required to include packaging that shares his story and vision for a better future.

Anyone else agree?

I honestly hadn't thought about this perspective. I think most of your ideas are good, telling his story is more important now than ever.

I agree it should be used in our uniforms more as a badge than a logo, if for no other reason than it's just not a great logo in of its self. I think it should be used as a branding template I guess? I am not sure, somehow incorporate it into the logo without it being just a big sguare thing. It being used as a badge of honor to be earned is a really cool idea to honor his legacy.

Maybe this new beer and the Jack Trice beer can consolidate into one and benefit both, with an emphasis on the Jack Trice foundation. (also because apparently 4 beers is too many to keep track of for some of us)

As fellow designer I completely agree w/ Kavagi's original post.

It's not even necessarily about alcohol but just protecting any brand properly from a visual standpoint.

Talking about this stuff doesn't mean anybody is "outraged", the baseline is a question of what is good business practice. Everyone can calm down with perception that any discussion is a five alarm outrage.

I work heavy in licensed product and there's a good reason major licensors don't let me do whatever the hell I want with their brands. Is that logo a part of ISU athletic dept brand identity? Is it an official brand outside the department? Is it in the public domain to do whatever with? It's kind of a unique situation where doing good works in the community makes sense, but supporting ISU football also makes sense for it.

Approximately 140,000 Americans die every year from alcohol-related causes.

Overuse of alcohol is known to cause liver disease, contribute to cardiovascular disease, and increases the risk of various cancer types (upper respiratory, digestive, liver, and breast cancers). The source doesn't say this, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is associated with obesity given the calories involved.

Alcohol-related automobile accidents kill 10,000+ annually with many of those being innocent bystanders at the wrong place at the wrong time and not just the drunk one behind the wheel.

Alcohol use is strongly correlated with various other crimes and social ills, as well, including domestic and child abuse, assault, sexual assault, and is very commonly a factor in self-harm attempts. An EMT uncle of mine told me he hasn't been to any scenes of a suicide where there wasn't booze involved.

In short, alcohol is a terrible burden on our society. I don't know who coined this phrase but...

"If alcohol were invented tomorrow, then there's no chance in hell the FDA would approve it for any use and much less recreational use. It's a horrible drug but it is somehow grandfathered in."

Blender Cy was never my favorite, but most of my dislike was because they tried to turn blue into our primary color:rolleyes:.
For Tshirts and sweatshirts walking, leaning, and BB Cy are my favorites. I like the new logo on polos. Clean and simple

Lots of competition out there for private labelled beer. Just don't see Iowa as a big year round beer market.

Remember, it's the thought that counts. Apparently you haven't been very vocal about your "dislike" of that thing. (No wonder they were on clearance - ha!)

Major warning sign there, dude. You need a new woman and should kick her to the curb now before it's too late.
