Not a flame, but a fact finding mission. As is my MO, let me 1st stage the scene. I used to be a huge college b-ball fan just like I am f-ball. I followed it diligently including ISU & UNI and rooted for them all especially come tournament time.

Alas life, 4 kids and time constraints, along with boorish, complaining Iowa fans have stolen my passion. Anywhoooo I still love the 64-team field. I know the Valley over recent years has been very solid. Are they good enuff to win some games in the field?

Also because I like to be efficient................

How does the whole "credit" for posting thing work, as it is a differnt amount every time? annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddd being ever more efficient how do I rep someone!!

Chad

Sorry for the convolution, but hey that's my style....:mask:

I think its hard to tell how good UNI really is, because the MVC seems to be down this year. I only think they are a 1 bid conference this year. UNI isn't good enough to get an at-large bid IMO.
Not sure about the credit thing, whether its different every time or not, and how much you get for each post.
To give rep, you click on the little blue box with a check mark in the middle of it, under the user's information on the left hand side.

See that I feel like a really accomplished some thing here. Got an informed opinion on UNI and found out how to rep someone. I really am an IT idiot.....

Back to UNI, isn't it conceivable Creighton and them both make it regardless? Unless of course they have a late season collapse or a 1st round conference tourney ouster? I would however agree that the Valley appears down.

I don't think Creighton or UNI is a guaranteed lock. In our eyes they may be good enough to make the tourny and should be in, but I don't think the committee will think the same. They know the MVC is down it's always tough for the MVC to get very many at-large bids, if any. Therefore, I think the tourny champion will be the only team from the conference to go dancing. Now, if CU or UNI win out and make it to the MVC championship then I could see them possibly getting an at-large berth. UNI's game against Siena (sp?) will tell us a lot on how good they actually are.

UNI is good. All who watch college bball know it by now, yeah, MVC may be down a little, but UNI is heads above the rest.

R they deep, quick, big, good shooters, good defenders? What's their identity and do they match up well with most teams or with some teams not at all?

Chad

UNI or CU will not be getting an at large bid. CU has been to inconsistant all year, and UNI had a terrible non-conference season. The Panthers lost the first conference game of the year in double OT, and hasn't played a bad game since, winning 12 of the last 13. I don't know why or how they turned it on but they did.

To answer the question: Yes, no, yes, yes, and yes. UNI's real strength is depth. Everyone that suits up for games, playes significant minutes. They basically have an 11 man rotation. They do not have one star player that they rely on, because everyone can score and everyone can shoot. Its a different person every game that lights it up.

The best part of it is that UNI only loses one senior for next year, and he is not even a starter.

To be fair I think UNI is better than they looked against ISU. They seemed to miss a lot of open shots when we played them. I think the Valley is down again this year, and probably only gets one team in the NCAAs. Two max, and I doubt that.

Got back on and he answered the Q pretty much perfectly for ya, they do not have a lot in the way of overall speed and running the floor, although they have quickness in guys like Travis Brown. Adam Koch (cook) is having a helluva year, big guy 4 who can shoot from 18 or outside much like ISU's JVB. Jordan Egleseder is the ugliest looking guy on the court usually, lol, but he is STRONG inside and always makes a team worry about him when he is inside. Ahelegbe is a great ball handler and Moran can do a lot.

Overall they depend on great half courts sets and they are very defensive and they just FLAT OUT HUSTLE. This UNI team is always coming up/winning the jump balls, on the floor, hustle out of bounds type plays. And they have a lot of depth. And it's LEGITIMATE depth.

Is it a team that's gonna be in the sweet 16 or elite 8? um, no. If they run into an upper conference team that has the athletes to press and run the court they will be in trouble. But I personally do see them in the tourney, but probably not going for. I know ISU beat them here in CF in OT early in the year, but UNI is still the better team IMO. Iowa State's Craig Brackins is obviously leaps and bounds above any player for UNI, but ISU just doesn't have a better team right now. I'd like to see UNI make it past the first weekend once in the tourney but I don't see it happening. Hopefully they don't have another collapse late season and miss out. *knocks wood*

Thanks guys and this is what I used to enjoy about Iowa AND ISU's b-ball teams. In fact it is what had been missing from our f-ball team in recent years and what is the key to ALL good teams IMO.

Chads,

I think their loss to us really hurt their RPI.

We and Indiana State are just crushing their RPI now since they were home losses. UNI's RPI is still in the 70's last I looked. They need help to get into the tourney.

Illinois State had 25 wins in that conference last year and didn't make it in. They are a long way from a lock.

I don't think that UNI has a chance for an at large, but it should be noted that when comparing them to an Illinois St. team that did not get in last year you have to realize they did not win the regular season championship and got blown out in the conf tournament title game.

UNI has an excellent chance to win the regular season title, and that is something for the resume.

But like I said, nobody in the Valley has a solid enough resume to get an at large IMO.

My gut tells me that if you lose to both Iowa and ISU in the same season you are not an at-large bid team.
