Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

If Big 10 picks up 4 and Big 12 picks up 4, that means Fox and Espn will pay for 8, but not all 10 together. What did Fox and ESPN accomplish by basically picking up the PAC 10 minus two? I realize OSU and WSU not worth much, but was it worth all the hassle? That’s why I think Arizona comes and Pac stays together minus UA and Colorado IMHO.
For Fox/ESPN, maybe. For ASU & UU, the math doesn't hold up. They'd be crazy not to come.

Soooooo, if these adds go through with the B1G and B12, ESPN and Fox will be paying out their ass for teams they had access to for much less. What happens when the GORs need extended for a conference like the B12 or future ACC/PAC9 leftovers? I just have a feeling the major money is gonna end up in the hands of the big 2 when all is said and done and the rest will be fighting for scraps.

It’s the corporate consolidation playbook. Keep squeezing out the lesser tiers until you have control with the top one or two. Then you pay the “lesser folks” nothing because they don’t have any options.
Argh!

Well, at least we've got 6-7 years to go before the next squeeze. And I think BY will make things very interesting in that time. Not that I think he will be around that long. I hope he is, but I have a feeling BY may move on to the next chapter in his life, another step up perhaps?

Ventured over to Tony Altimore's twitter to see if he is crying and irate. Lo and behold, he is talking up the Big 12. Hmm, what could have changed his tune? I almost couldn't figure out what he was talking about without his nice pretty charts. He is advocating the Big 12 bringing all the Pac the Big 10 doesn't take.

Feel bad for OSU and WSU. They are getting screwed over with this realignment stuff, like others before and nearly us.

BY was with the Nets for 15 years. IMO he will stay through the next media contract negotiation. I also think he wants to push Big 12 basketball and market it internationally. This really pushes the league’s potential. BY’s status would be legendary. And then he moves on to his next desired move.

Sure it is. I still get it. It's also pretty immature for a conference to turn down a school because its fans on Twitter are annoying. Good thing Yormark knows better.

You'd understand hoping ISU would join the MAC over the Big Ten because Iowa is icky? I don't understand that mindset at all. I guess I understand it in the way I understand psychosis exists as a thing.

I wasn't suggesting to not invite them because of it, but no I really don't understand that at all. I didn't see any ISU fans acting that way the multiple times we faced conference doomsday in regards to Iowa/Big Ten and dreaming that we stay in crumbling Big 12 or lying to ourselves the MAC and MWC or CUSA were better situations. It was the opposite that we would have all gone nuts to join Iowa's stable situation.

The extended analogy didn’t land because that’s not what I said, and not really close to it honestly. Utah was above BYU in the Pac when BYU was independent. Utah doesn’t want to be at the same level as them, in the same conference. So they’re denigrating the Big 12. If we were in a similar position, where we’d fallen into being in a superior conference to Iowa for a decade, we also would not want to feel like we were dropping back to their level by joining their league.

Utah is a good brand and school in a growing state; I’m excited for some reasons to visit SLC and catch a Cyclones game there every now and then.

They did put out a pretty wild statement when USC/UCLA joined that no other teams would bring value to Big Ten that grew the $ situation for all...were they lying then or lying now?
Or, as stated above, could there be some antitrust movement on the media's side by creating false value during the P12 contract negotiations? Interesting to say the least.

So this is why I have a hard time seeing Stanford or Cal in the B1G. The Pac is about to blow up because the schools left after USCLA bolted aren't worth enough to match B12 money. Now the TV networks will end up paying B12 rates for the 4 corners and B1G rates for WAOR, Stanford, and Cal? It would have been cheaper to just pay the Pac 12 enough to hold it together.

Stanford and Cal get demoted with OSU and WSU. Still think it is possible a couple others get left beyond that.
I know I'm a broken record, but again a post that ignores 'intent' by the media to undervalue the P12 to force moves. The only argument I see for the media doing this, is that they DO value the P12 teams, but they more value the non-west coast fans and hope to exploit better overall viewership using non-west coast influence. I'm open to other reasons for the media companies to now pay more for those P12 teams.

The ACC is like an NFL RBs on a rookie deal. A ton of value for what they are. That rookie deal runs out in 2036 and some of them will get a lucrative contract while others will be happy to stay in the league. But there will be no contract negotiations before that deal runs out.
Is it legal for B1G media partners to now negotiate buying power directly to ESPN for existing ACC contract? In essence, buying out enough of the contract that both the ACC GOR and media partners agree to disband for new open negotiations. It'd give ESPN a little more $$$ to negotiate what they want (ie SEC) and allows ACC teams to open the door to their preferred destinations. Just curious.

Precisely. I’d assume this is why they were telling us to hold at 14 as well.
Again, don't ignore a separate basketball contract. Example: If the P2 has half the football content and the rest is split up by everyone else, we see what we're seeing. BUT, now imagine the P1 basketball conference having half the basketball content (just for arguments sake), the combined value of that conference with their more miniscule football value jumps significantly. I'm sure someone can put real numbers to this hypothetical, but I'm pretty sure that's BY's strategy to even the overall contract values of the P3.

Read their boards for 5 minutes and you'll feel the same.
I'll never forget the phrase: "5% of the people do 95% of the whining". So, take that for what it's worth. I certainly wouldn't feel good about judging an entire fanbase by what's on their boards. That said, of the few boards I've been on this one, by comparison seems to be more pragmatic. But even we have our embarrassing outliers.

Lofl. Suddenly his PAC royalty is on the same level as "other great schools" like SDSU and Memphis. What a fn tool.

From here on out he is 100% B1G is the best by 100 country miles and all others are community colleges. Bank it.

This is almost a back-door suggestion to screw the B12. Where’s the TV money coming from for SMU? Boise State? Memphis? I’m surprised he didn’t include “great brands” like Tulane and South Dakota State on his B12 map.

Ya. I’m not sure why it’s the big 12s responsibility to shelter everyone left behind by the big 10s pillaging.

There have been rumors that there was a deal offered from ESPN to the Pac for 200M, but got deny/pulled.

Point neither of the networks were willing to pony up the required amount for an entire conference. Especially when the Pac was looking for more than 300M per year.

I am sure they saw the same thing we saw, and expected the Pac to fall apart. And when it did they could take the teams for pennies on the dollar compared to bidding on the entire conf alone. If it didnt fall apart they were willing to just let it go or bid on it for scraps.

You can expect they were willing to pay similar to what they are paying now....in which they will get the new members to the B1G and B12 for a similar amount.

So in the end, they got the Pac schools they wanted, to the conferences they want, for way less than what they would have to pay to the Pac separate as a separate contract. Then in the future they dont have to bid with another conference and can consolidate their money between less conferences.

Finally they are getting the teams and splitting that money between more partners, so in the end they arent paying that much each comparative.

I think it was Yahoo or maybe the Athletic that had a detailed timeline of the Pac12 moves and it mentioned they asked their media partners for $50 mil per school ($500 mil) in early negotiations. They royally ****** up at every single step over the past 5 years.
