Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

One other difference between the California situation and what might be happening in Arizona is that UCLA agreed to leave without consulting the overseeing board and had to go back to get their approval to make it official (which is when the payment to Cal got added). If Arizona and ASU are strongly split on what they want to do and both feel like they are taking the best course of action it’s harder to imagine the Arizona Board of Regents stopping one or making them make a payment to the other because they are opening choosing to take a bad deal.

Agreed. Cal had no options when UCLA left. ASU probably has options or at least had options, so it’s hard for them to come back and play the victim if the PAC falls apart.

Yeah, Stanford will be fine.

That's why they're indifferent. They can 1000% afford almost whatever they want. They could even go FCS in football and it would pretty much have the same impact on the University financials as a rounding error.

It's much different than schools like WSU or OSU who's athletics related revenues I would imagine are a more crucial piece of the University landscape.
If the PAC totally falls apart, they can go independent easily. Their non-revs and basketball can compete in the MWC or WCC. Football - they can probably get $10M range for whatever home games they can schedule, and when they have ND at home NBC will probably pay $10M just for that one game.

Arizona owes it to their basketball team to go to the Big 12. Best basketball conference in America. PAC 12 drags them down. No UCLA now. No USC. An invitation to the Big 12 is a prize. Best prize Arizona can get. And they are at the head of the line.

Wow. They have an enrollment of about 17,326 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. That’s $86,575 per student per year.

Starting to understand why they haven’t been super vocal about needing to find a home if this PAC thing falls apart.
Yeah, and Palo Alto voting down a multi-family apartment complex - not in our neighborhood.

Someone reported that the BOR could force UA to subsidize ASU if they left. It would be just like UCLA has to pay $10MM to Cal annually.
They could, but would they?

The UA & ASU situation is different. Both were given the opportunity to join the Big12.

In the case of UCLA/Cal- Cal didn't get a Big10 invite.

Difference between obnoxiously high B1G payments. And according to the PAC 12 the money could be better than the Big 12’s when everyone in America signs up for Apple+ and the PAC 12 subscription. Hell ASU owes Arizona when the Wildcats go Big 12.

Stanford may not care if they are in PAC or independent, but if they had a choice they would pick PAC. So Robbins might as well try to keep AZ in PAC so Stanford doesn't have to deal with realignment once he becomes the president.
You are overstating Robbin's role. Sure he has the voice vote, but he's taking direction from others. His AD, Boosters and Regents.

If the underlying support is strongly behind joining Big12, Robbins will go that direction, even if he has misgivings.

I'll fully admit my knowledge base is heavily based on Iowa State and Iowa, but its been my understanding that financially the athletic programs and universities essentially stand alone. The only financial contribution the athletic departments would make to the university is paying tuition for the student athletes and maybe some use fees for university facilities. Otherwise the athletic depart spends the money they generate on things within the department like coaches salaries, team opperating budgets, and facility improvements. In the not too distant past the universities actually subsidized the athletic programs (this might still be the case at UNI). Now from a marketing and perception standpoint their is absolutely a significant role the athletic programs have for the university.

Probably stupid question that may not matter. But if anyone is bored at work, it would be interesting to see how many UA grads are on the ABOR vs ASU grads

BY is good. I would certainly enjoy seeing a transcript of his interview for Commissioner of the Big 12. I'll bet that would be some inspiring reading. I know that likely will not happen but I'll bet that things are going the way of the plan that he laid out to the Big 12.
We are seeing the difference between having a "Proactive" vs a "Reactive" Commish in real time.

Stay aggressive and think outside of the box. Not that all of Yormark's ideas will work but trying them and keeping the ones that do will make the conference "hip" and show strength which should help sell the conference in the next media rights deal. That is my hope at least.

Do they also owe Northern Arizona because they didn't get an invite?

Do Iowa and Iowa State owe UNI because they didn't get an invite?

Again, I'm not advocating this. Iowa State and Iowa owe UNI nothing...

I'm sorry, this is just one of the funniest videos I've ever seen, regardless of what context they are trying to use it in. I'm still crying from laughing so hard.

Oh my god…. That is so good.
