More like the sagging loaded diaper that is dragging behind.I've always said that Nebraska is the safety pin holding the Big Ten together...
I don't have Twitter so can't see if there is more detail here, but is this saying the $1/subscriber/quarter escalator is for the conference to share or per school?
Let's say they get 25M subscribers (same as ESPN+ lol so not happening in GK's wildest dreams but **** it, let's pretend) who pay for their service year round, 4 quarters.
That's $100M split at least 9 ways if they add no other schools, so $11M/school total on top of $20M/school base, so $31M in the most wildly optimistic scenario possible? Please tell me this is what GK proposed today.
Ok so how did they not already have the Big 10 network in NYC? I freaking had it in Dallas almost 20 years ago. Why do they pay 70 cents more if it's in the footprint? I'm not disagreeing, just curious to how that worked.
So tempted to troll as byu or someone

An apt summary of the Pac12's media situation
Same. For years, I have been very adamant about refusing to subscribe to yet another streaming service. We have Netflix (mostly for the anime) and Amazon (mostly for the free shipping), and I grudgingly subbed to Disney+ this year (mostly for the Star Wars). Adding another sub - one that have...forum.utefans.net

Pac12 Networks top estimated subscriber count was 19 million.
Last estimated count I could find was 14.8 million at the end of 2020.
Based on the Pac12 network previously generating $0.13 per month per subscriber (Wilner article), you would think the $1 per sub/per quarter escalator has to only kick in somewhere north of their current subscriber base.
The only way the contract reaches Big12 level payouts is with paying the 3 new schools half shares and they reach all time highs of subscribers.
Can the fact that all games will be streamed (necessitating a subscription) and the 3 new programs make up for the loss of USCLA fans and take them to new subscriber highs?

But if the press box is filled with air, make sure your pencil is not sharp, otherwise you may be in trouble. If you’re going into a large press box you better have a large pencil.
10M is wayyy optimistic imo. That’s my understanding as well. But in reality, it’ll be 10m subscribers for 2 quarters of the year. So $20m / 12 teams = $1.7m per team.
But what if Apple had you select your preferred team when you signed up and your $1 / quarter web to them only?
But it’s $1 per sub per quarter for the conference. Divide that $8-9 mil by 9 or 10 or 12…10M is wayyy optimistic imo.
I looked at weekly PAC ratings last year using this article. Excluding CU, USC, and UCLA, the remaining schools averaged 8.575M viewers per week. That number is high though because I’d be counting 1 person twice for conference games.
So let’s, optimistically, say they average 5M unique viewers per week. I’m going to say a bulk of those are casual viewers who will not pay for and Apple Sub, but let’s, optimistically, say 70% of those viewers are die hard fans who would be willing to pay a subscription to watch their team play on Apple. That would, optimistically, net you 3.5M subs.
I hate giving MHVers credibility, but he said escalators increase in tiers. I think the first tier was 1-4M at $1 per sub per school/quarter. I assume they’d lose half their subscribers after January and even more after March, but let’s say they hold steady in Q1 and lose half in Q2. So their optimistic scenario, in my view, is $3.5M additional for Q4, $3.5M additional for Q1, and $1.75M additional for Q2 (not sure how they would handle September which falls in Q3). That would be $8.75M on a $20M base. I think the absolute best they could hope for is $28-$29M and sacrificing all exposure with limited (no?) exposure.
It's a collection of universities that always think they're the smartest guy in the room. Stanford/Cal have rubbed off big time on them.I see why we have UCONN on standby. Can’t bet the house on PAC schools. They are morons. CU just hadn’t been indoctrinated enough to fall for this one again.
More than the $20M as an indicator of individual worth. The $20M is an indicator media partners don't have an interest in a conference located in 5 states (WA, OR, CA, AZ & UT).If the average of the remaining PAC 12 members is only $20 million per team and that includes Oregon and Washington, really doesn’t say much for most of them, especially Cal, Oregon State and Washington State, and Stanford. You would think Oregon, Washington and Utah, as much as they brag about themselves, would move the needle north of $20 for the whole conference.
Utah has a drug problem. Stay off the copium kids.
The Pac12 supposedly at one point had 19 million subscribers with only a portion of the games on TV..MLS Season Pass for AppleTV, which has more passionate fans across the US (hell I'd check attendance numbers just in Pac12 territory I bet MLS would probably top them), and only after signing the best player in the world did they pass 1 million subscribers world wide.
So if you're trying to guess how many subscribers this would get, I'd start lower than that.
The Pac12 supposedly at one point had 19 million subscribers with only a portion of the games on TV..
Attendance numbers are apples to oranges in this situation.
I was just about to come back and say that. I misread his post. I way overestimated then. You’re looking at 8-9M split at least 10 ways. If he was right about the contract requiring 12 teams than that’s even worse, because there are no teams out there that will bring enough subscribers to offset their addition. But it’s $1 per sub per quarter for the conference. Divide that $8-9 mil by 9 or 10 or 12…
yikes
