Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

It’s about compelling football games and teams, not markets. BYU/Utah would absolutely be watched as a P5 game, and Utah will attract fans of other conferences to tune in because they’ve been good.
I don’t find anything compelling about Utah other than when they play BYU

How does our board 'making up its mind' have ANY bearing on things?
Zero bearing. Just see people arguing both ways saying money doesn’t really matter anymore but then a couple pages later saying the top teams will blow up all the stability for more money. I mean it’s a message board so I’m probably expecting to much lol

Wilner mailbag today:
  • Gives basically zero chance of OR or WA joining the Big12.
  • Admits Yormark outmaneuvered Kliavkoff all the way.
  • Says Arizona could easily jump and maybe the entire 4 corners.
  • Says Stanford and Cal are rudderless with change in leadership, but thinks they could both land Big10.
  • SD St > Colorado
  • Says PAC should expand with at least 3 now, but is expecting disappointment.
  • Hasn't been misled by his sources.
  • It's all Larry Scott's fault.

1. I don’t think OR or WA are joining Big 12, but I would not give it zero chance. I actually think it is higher than ASU or Utah at this point because the Big 12 doesn’t need ASU or Utah and they don’t add value.
2. Absolutely agree that BY outmaneuvered GK and will continue to do so.
3. I think Arizona is coming, but not sure when, but don’t think other two are.
4. Agree on the rudderless comment, but don’t think that they add incremental value to Big 10 TV contract.
5. San Diego State is only better in on field performance, but Colorado has more fan support and is a higher value school where it matters - to the networks.
6. Agree PAC should expand and agree it will be disappointing.
7. He may not have been misled, but he and/or them have been delusional.
8. LS has some blame, but GK has to take blame as well. Look what Yormark has done as a new leader. You can’t blame the previous leader if you have not righted the ship. The is what he was hired to do.

USC/UCLA's join date in the B1G (August 2, 2024) may be an indication that the P12 deals all expire on either July 31 or August 1 -- instead of June 30/July 1 like most other conferences.

If that's the case, the standard one-year departure notification deadline is coming up either Monday or Tuesday, and Colorado got in under the wire.
With the media deal & GOR expiring and no replacement, the PAC schools are all free agents. Unless there are rules / fees in the conference bylaws, schools are free to leave after they expire with no penalty or notice window requires.

He also speaks from a position where Michigan and Ohio St are smart enough - for now - not to make the same mistakes the Big 12 made. The question is, how long do the upper schools like Michigan and Ohio St, or Alabama and Georgia in the SEC, want to keep paying the teams like Northwestern, Rutgers, and Vanderbilt? With where ESPN wants to take college athletics, that temptation only grows by the year.
They need the bottom feeders to continue to remain upper schools. They don’t want every game to be against the top teams. They are smart enough to understand that.

Possibly. But it is also easy to see a scenario that an Alabama and other top FB schools leave their conferences to cut a mega, mega media deal. Who would they play for wins if not Vanderbilt and the other bottom feeders? They would still play all of those teams that they wanted. Just pay them $ millions to come and be fodder for a game. Works out way better for Alabama to pay Vanderbilt a big payday to show up occasionally rather than letting Vanderbilt have an equal share of conference revenues every year.

Alabama has no problem scheduling four cupcakes this year and that would not change in the future if they leave Vandy and the others to fend for themselves. Vandy just becomes another cupcake paid on a per appearance basis.

I'm happy that you are here. Enjoy the banter?

I just don't see the difference between BYU and Utah....6 of one, half dozen of the other...no need to double up there and take up a valuable spot.

I agree with this. Why do you need Utah when you already have BYU? Salt Lake City market isn't a whole lot bigger than Des Moines.

Its their viewership and fan support that gives them value. I dont love Utah either, and is probably last of the 3corners and UW/UO for wanted adds. But their viewership and fans support which is near the top of the Pac10, that gives them value, not to mention their recent success in FB.

I spent the afternoon on the PAC forums. Thought I'd check in on UCONN. They're still as lukewarm on us as we are on them. It's about half in favor of the Big 12. Many are hanging onto ACC Phillips' comments that they are looking into expansion as their opening for the ACC. The other half seems hell-bent on getting that ever-elusive ACC invite even if that conference could be dying in 10 years. Those in favor of the ACC seem to be the same fans that prefer staying in the Big East with no football rather than joining the Big 12.

I have flip flopped on this but I think, as of now, we take the 3-4 corners and no to WAOR. WAOR won't be all in. Plus, Yormark will have more pet projects, and I can see WAOR saying they they are dumb and aren't going along with it. The Pac with WAOR backfilled with lower end G5 schools will be severely weakened.

A concern would be if the 4 corners will want to jump back to the Pac the next contract.

You say they won't... and yet last weekend I listened to a "Michigan man" sports radio host talk all show about how Northwestern should do what the U of Chicago did 70ish years ago and leave the Big 10 on its own accord because they just can't compete anymore - and a LOT of people called in and agreed with him. Yes, that's just one voice in a sea of many, but to say that that particular viewpoint doesn't exist because "Michigan would never..." is being blind and deaf to what money typically does to human decision making.
Money has NO effect on me! I am pure!

:D

Take Arizona and stay there if Washington and Oregon aren’t coming. 14 is a good number and gives us opportunities for more growth. No real reason to lock in ASU and Utah. That said I’m ok if that’s the route we go.

I don’t know why everyone is thinking WA or OU have any kind of leverage to dictate anything to anyone at this point just because they are OU and WA.

You’re one of those nut-cup fans, aren’t you? Oregon loves gimmIcks, or forward thinking marketing in the more polite term.

I‘m just at the point where I don’t see any monetary reason they would stay in the PAC. They can’t get a deal done as it is, and the hits keep coming. There is nothing there. No one is going back to the PAC after this.

Alabama does play Texas as one of their OOC games this year.

if they do they better have an ironclad deal with the Big 10 in the world or people will flip their ****.

Vandy will likely always have a spot in the SEC. If for no other purpose than to store documents the SEC doesn't want exposed by FOIA. Every major conference does this with their private schools.
So Baylor and TCU store the documents that the B12 does not want to expose?
