We were overseas on vacation this spring and went into a restaurant to eat. My wife asks for a menu and the waitress pointed to a QR code on our table. We had to download the menu on to her phone.
I was just curious if anyone else has had that happen at a restaurant.

We just got a software program that enables us to do QR codes for all our products on the showroom floor. It will take a while, but it will save us a ton of time in updating pricing when costs change (because we won't, as the QR code refers back to whatever costs are in the software at that moment).

I would imagine that would help a restaurant so that they don't have to go through the expense of reprinting menus every time there is an increase.

I'm indifferent toward them, but I have heard one convincing argument against them: It makes you immediately pull out your devices when you sit down. That generally leads to scrolling and inhibits conversation.

Of course, people can just put their phones away, but I do agree that it can distract from conversation.

I am a huge fan of restaurants that bring the card reader to the table instead of having to wait for the server 2x before you can leave.

See it all the time now. I prefer paper that is recycled/not reused but the QR thing doesn't bug me at all.

Recently went into an upscale Nike shoe store on vacation and everything was QR because it'll tell you price/sizes available/if they are new or used/if they have a box.
I'm not a sneakerhead but thought it was pretty cool for that type of business.

It's not going away. To many advantages for restaurants, changing the menu and prices is a lot simpler this way.

I guess I'm in the minority. I think they're great. I don't need to handle some grimy menu that the last customer put their nasty ass hands all over. Half of them are ripped and stained and who knows what else.

"Welcome to Olive Garden. Would you like anything to drink? ... Ok, I'll go get that while you hold this used Kleenex!!"

I'll take a qr code over that mess any day.

I don't mind them other than it feels rude to immediately whip out my phone when I sit down, it makes sense though to not have to reprint menus when something changes.

The QR code for menus has been happening for quite some time since Covid. What is new is scanning the QR code to pay at the table, which I find very helpful!

It was happening for a while, but, as with remote work, Covid was a catalyst to widespread adoption. I worked on a web app for an Iowa bar in 2015 - idea was that since they had so many rotating taps, the app was always current, and could also help steer you towards what you liked.

Not to mention maintaining control of your card.

I don't need to add an app on my phone for a restaurant I might go to once

The vast majority aren't an app, in my experience. Usually it's a link to a page on their website or a PDF of their menu.

Agreed that wanting you to install an app for that specific restaurant is overkill

If we each do it in the case of separate checks, sometimes the food arrives at totally different times. I hate it. At the place I am thinking of, I have to get my own water, plastic silverware, napkins, etc. The switch away from real glasses, plates and silverware is not good for the environment.
