Was it just me or did I see gas prices in Ames spiked up by 20 cents of the day of Ragbrai yesterday? I swear the price of gas was the same as it was in Boone! This seems like price gouging to me.

According to Gas Buddy, the Boone Casey's is at $3.69 as of 8 minutes ago. Kum & Go on the West side of Ames is $3.59, as of an hour ago, from the same source.

Gas prices have jumped everywhere this week. Even here in TX. It's not RAGBRAI-related or gouging.

That K&G was $3.49 yesterday afternoon, unchanged from weeks prior. And yet the west Ames HyVee was 20 cents higher at the same time.

Jumped 30 cents this week in the twin cities. I highly doubt the price hike is due to a bike ride in Iowa

crude oil prices have increased nearly $10 this month is likely the cause for the price hike in gas

Busses and RVs associated with the RAGBRAI teams would be affected.
To be a devils advocate, wouldn't "price gauging" occur for gas stations around Ames at every home football game then?

It seems to happen with some regularity around Iowa State Fair time, too.

gas price by county

some fun data available. Statewide, the average price is up 20 cents from a week ago (regular). Highest prices in the state are concentrated in the NE quadrant. I will also note that the average price in MN has increased 15 cents the past week as well. NE increased 10 cents, IL increased 10 cents, and MO increased 17 cents.

This along with the fact crude oil prices are about $10 more per barrel than this time a month ago demonstrates the jump in gas prices in central Iowa is not related to Ragbrai.

Edit: Cedar Rapids is up 30 cents from a week ago, Council Bluffs up 10 cents, Waterloo up 23 cents. Clearly these increases are not related to Ragbrai.

Gas and diesel both went up a dime in Carroll over the weekend. Ragbrai stayed there Monday night.
