Quarterback Analysis

Speaking of local talent, I'm big time pulling for Abu to take the starting running back position. He put size on his senior year and his speed is amazing. Also Kai Black at receiver though I think we have some dudes coming up in that room.
Would be so cool in a few years if those 3 guys really develop and are the face of the offense. Would be awesome to have a qb/rb/wr trio all from central Iowa

Just doesn't bode well imo that a last minute JUCO transfer is challenging Becht. This whole thing is exhausting. Still excited for the season though. I really want to see fresh blood on the field even if there's growing pains.

I see no reason Rocco can't be be better than Dekkers was last year. Rocco may not have the arm strength of Dekkers or Kohl, but if he can read the defense and be accurate with his passes I think we will be better as an offense. These were two areas where Dekkers struggled last year. I am also hopeful that we will have a much better TE play which should help any QB this year.

I'm a Cyclone fanatic, so I will always lean toward optimism regarding ISU's potential. I am a believer the Cyclones will win 7-8 games this season.

If the staff expects Dekkers, Brecht, Kohl or Hughes to become the next Brock Purdy- we are in trouble. IMO that was part of the issue last year with the staff's apporach with a first year QB, Dekkers. Sure our QB needs to be a leader, but offensive success can't be so reliant on the QB position.

That means, as others have noted, our O-line needs to step up. I understand the pessimism, but its not like Clanton has a group of guys with limited experience. Here are starts by returning lineman:
  • Hufford - 20
  • Simmons - 35
  • Miller - 11
  • Treiber - 7
  • Remsburg - 13
Plus there are a number of RS-Soph & Juniors that should be physically ready to play.

I also think there is reason to be optimistic because this team was close last year, we were 1-6 in games decided by a touchdown or less. We should also have a solid defense to leverage and if we can get improved Special Teams from Langs' group- maybe we are a more balanced team.

For ISU to be a 7-8 win team, we don't need to have the next Brock Purdy, we need the next Kyle Kempt. Our QB doesn't need to be a human highlight reel, he just needs to throw with accuracy and limit mistakes.

Becht actually had a 4 star rating on one site. Him not beating out Dekkers after what it looked like last year makes me squeamish. To be fair to Dekkers the running game was awful and play calling/route trees were less than inspiring. Dekkers has the tools and early season I was already a believer as he was having good success.
Until the month of October rolled around, I was a firm believe in Dekkers as well. By then, like you alluded to, injuries in the RB room had piled up and the offensive play calling was very offensive. Probably not all on Hunter. I have not been fair in my criticism of Hunter, but it has kind of been easy to pile on in light of the gambling allegations. I really do find myself hoping that the suspension isn't too severe and he can play eventually, and maybe turn our season around if things are a little shaky early on with the less experienced guys. But if one of the other 3 guys takes it and runs with it, my tune would change fairly quickly.

I’m not worried about QB play, we have competitive guys that can each play a role where or when needed.

My biggest concerns are getting more than one receiver to be a threat and for some consistency out of the TE group. There’s talent in both groups, but if they don’t step up, the QB doesn’t matter.

Really hoping your are correct about the bolded. The WR room has been lacking for a few years now. One stud usually, but after that a lot of unfulfilled potential.

Rocco has just as much talent as Dekkers IMO.

If the RB and WR room aren't good anyone is doomed no matter who is at QB.

That's what's been very worrying is the lack of development on offense the last few years. Line: poor, RB: poor, WR: poor minus X.

It's certainly not going to be our Achilles Heel.
My concerns go in this order:
1. O-Line play
2. Receiver group without X
3. QB

I think if we get an O-line that can even kind of block and more than 1 receiver that can find a way to get open, one of our QBs will be able to step into that role.

I'm not really concerned about running backs at all, because I have no idea how to evaluate last year. They were getting killed in the backfield. I'm not sure Superman would have been able to run well with our line last year.

The perplexing thing last year that kind of get pushed to the side are what you mention. RB and WR room. RB room, we knew was going to be a drop off from Breece, but maybe didn't quite fathom how much of a drop off as a fan base. Also couldn't have foreseen the season ending injury to Brock, which certainly magnified the issue. Silas at his size was never going to be the answer, and Sanders is hopefully going to be better this year, but if not, that's another miss in that room. WR room for whatever reason guys just haven't panned out. We hear about them in the spring and in the fall camps, but then they fall silent on Saturdays then end up transferring.

The TE room also experience a predictable, but maybe not quite so predictably drastic drop off as well. Easton Dean wasn't the prince who was promised. Sounds like they are talking up some younger guys again this offseason though, so perhaps that gap will be somewhat better filled now.

Agree but I think Dean was injured so not necessarily a true indicator for him.

Id rather have Dekkers playing but it's difficult to imagine a more simple, conservative offense that we ran with him. Almost seems impossible the playbook could get any smaller for the youngsters.

If the O-Line doesn't step up, the receivers don't matter at all.

If the O-line is great, I could play TE and catch the ball. (once anyway! - getting tackled one time would be the end of me)

Hot Take: Log me in as off the Dekkers bandwagon. Dudes got all the physical gifts a QB could ever need to be successful and the mind of a potato that has been sitting at the back of your cupboard forgotten for 8 months.

Cant read a defense. Zeros in on 1 target and doesn't often progress beyond that 1 target. sure he has a 60 something odd percent completion rate, but 4/6 passes he throws are behind the LOS or within 2 yards of it. Not impressed. Hopefully his mental game has taken a huge leap forward coming into this season. I don't know that I am sold on any of the QB's... really hope the O-line play takes a huge step forward and the run game gets established because I am not convinced that QB play can carry our offense as it stands this year.
