Divisions have really hurt Michigan State and Penn State. They'll now have Michigan as their protected rivalry, but may occasionally catch a break on the schedule otherwise.

I love Hartline, best recruiter in the country, but there’s a large section of the fan base that wouldn’t want to pay him 8 million a year because he “doesn’t have HC experience”. Just like the Braindead ISU fans that have that as their #1 requirement every time we have an opening in FB or MBB (also probably going to be the same thing with WBB lol).
I think they would go Vrabel as option 1 even though the smart move would be to elevate Hartline.
Problem with the east is that when you have a bad year it looks really bad. OSU only had the one bad Fickell year but everyone else has had some rough seasons. Unfortunately unless Tucker fixes the in game stuff Sparty is going to be 100% a basketball school for the next couple years. I still have Michigan for football but then their basketball program is comically bad now. I just like it when both schools are good but that makes me no different then any other alum.
Does Vrabel come back from the NFL? I agree with the rest of your thoughts here I just didn’t think about him as an option.

Agree but I also think Franklin has gotten less out of his talent than great coaches would have. Granted they’ve been really shaky at QB even with some longevity in the role. His reputation has always felt overly inflated to me.
But he reminds me of Jimbo in that they can recruit anybody but do little with them without elite assistants.

What if Vrabel gets canned or they start worrying Hartline will land a huge gig elsewhere? I could see one of those two things plus a loss to UM and no playoff making his seat hot.
Somebody remember this every time that ******* Bilas thinks he’s smart by saying college athletes are getting exploited but the coaches are great guys with the best interest of the players in mind. If you think college athletes are exploited, then i’m not sure how you can have much respect for college coaches. They are the ones getting rich off the kids, and it’s not close. ADs, commissioners are small potatoes compared to the coaches.
Those are fees for services/facilities the university provides for the athletic department.
I think what the poster was espousing is idea Athletic Departments send part of their revenue back to universities free of the university providing a service, facility, etc. Allowing the university to invest in enhanced academic programs.
IMO it's a great idea in a time when universities across the country are struggling for funding. What would be wrong if each intercollegiate sport had an expense cap that encompasses travel, debt service, salaries, etc.
The arms race that exists in college athletics is more destructive by promoting elitism (blue-bloods), limiting competition and waste of money that could be used for the core purpose of a university- academics!
Put PSU in the b1g W and give them Iowa’s last 5 or 6 schedules and Franklin looks a lot different. And probably doesn’t get his ass kicked as badly in the CCGs.
I don’t know the answer to this but are the schools whose AD’s are actually bringing in big money struggling for funding? For example Michigan, texas, bama, and OSU are in no way struggling. The schools who seem to be struggling are the smaller ones who’s AD probably isn’t making that much to make a difference.
I think in most cases the impact that athletics could have by kicking back money to the university isn't nearly as big as people think.
That's not to say there isn't a lot of waste and some really poor ROI on a lot of athletics facilities renovations, because there are. For most athletics are <5% of their total revenue. Ohio State is like 2.5%. Plus a lot of that athletic revenue is donor money that has an intent tied to it.
But to your point, The total Alabama system's endowment is $1.8B, which includes Bama, UAB plus whatever other state schools they operate. I think Alabama itself is like $1.3B. ISU's alone is over $1.5B (U of Iowa is $3B). Bama also has seen a decrease in tuition revenue over the past couple of years. So I'm not sure if they are struggling per se, but Bama might be a school where they AD is raking it in while the overall university is not.
But generally I do think there's probably a pretty good correlation between overall school and AD financial health among schools at least in the Big 10, Big 12 and SEC.
I know, totally shocking that Alabama might be that way.
I was looking at that for something else and was shocked. Must be 99% of all alumni giving goes to the AD.
Contrast with say, Grinnell. Their endowment is like $2.4B, but I bet the AD budget is a LOT smaller lol.
