***2023 Tennis Thread***

Feels like a 1 horse race. The only question is who gets through the other half of the draw to lose to Djokovic in the final. The potential of Alcaraz to make things exciting adds some intrigue though. Anyone else against Djokovic in the final sounds like a snooze fest.

It would be nice to see some guys get back in form and play well at least like Zverev, FAA, Berettini, Medvedev and Fritz.
I agree Alcaraz is one of very few that can beat Djokovic.

That's the depressing thing about this year's tournament to me all the contenders as recent as year ago have some serious question marks with injuries or just inconsistencies this year. That's not even mentioning nadal and Federer’s absence. Speaking of the old timer i am hoping Murray can put together a somewhat deep run. I believe he has Tsitsipas in potential 2nd round that could be something to get excited about

The U.S. Open is way more intriguing that Wimbledon this year. There's a lot of really good hard court players. There's so little tennis played on grass that almost no one is good at it. It took Nadal and Djokovic a while to figure out grass too. It'd be nice if they made a 1000 level tournament on grass. The "grass court season" is a joke

100% this! It’s insane they have no masters 1000s for grass and have 3 for clay. There needs to be one more week in here before Wimbledon to have a masters tournament. Or they need to just make Queens Club the masters event. Grass tennis is so different and good for the game and when your most prestigious tournament is on that surface it’s ridiculous that it’s basically a one-off surface at this point.

Completely agree right now there's almost a lack of respect from the atp for grass. Many players barely play on it and wimbledon almost always ends up with a long list of withdrawals

These roofs at all 4 majors are great and have let us have some tennis this week but man they really give the top of the game another advantage. There's players who have barely played a set of the tournament yet Djokovic moves into the 3rd round today

It’s a tough situation because if you can get matches in you do it, but when you have a lot of weather during the first few days especially it really wreaks havoc. Will be interesting to see if they get anymore washouts.

Plus I don't think the people spending big bucks for one of these tickets want to watch jarry vs cecchinato. I get it

Having 2nd round matches before some players have even begun their 1st round seems incredibly stupid.

For example. The Taylor Fritz match started on Monday, then got suspended in the 5th set. Rather than pick it up the first chance they had on Tuesday, they scheduled a bunch of matches before it and made them finish it two days later (today). So dumb. Just throw them out there for 20-30 minutes on center court or court 1 and be done with it.

Rain being an issue in the 1st round of the tournament is a disaster. They can withstand it later on when there aren't the shear number of matches to get through. Even the 2nd and 3rd round would have been way more manageable.

The grass courts are also an issue since I'm guessing they want to limit the number of matched played on center court so it isn't ruined by the end. Just a **** show all around when they have rain, which they pretty much always do since it's London.

I hope we get 5 sets of Murray/Tsitsipas. Does Wimbledon still stop matches that go past public transit time?

Not going to happen, especially on grass, but just one more time I want vintage Wawrinka to show up because believe it or not, when he's playing at his absolute best, even the Big 3 don't beat him. Problem is over his whole career he was never consistent, but the three times he's won a slam (only missing Wimbledon) nobody was touching him. The dude abused Novak twice (French and US Finals) in his absolute prime, as well as Nadal in that Aussie Final. And I won't even acknowledge Rafa's injury during that match because Stan was rag dolling him until he need the medical timeout.

Greatest one-handed backhand of all time, and when clicking, arguably the best backhand period. But Novak is going to destroy him on grass today.

The French Open final was one of the highest levels of Tennis I've ever seen. He also beat Djokovic in the Australian open semi year he beat Nadal. He just can't move as well. Stan's movement and fitness was always underrated in his prime

Agreed completely on that French Open final. I've watched more tennis matches then I care to admit, and that is the highest level from a single player I have ever seen. The only other one was the year at the French Rafa just humiliated Roger 6-1, 6-3, 6-0. But that wasn't nearly as good because Federer wasn't playing that well that day (mostly a credit to Nadal), but Novak was playing top-level tennis and Wawrinka hit him off the court and hit shots I've not seen since consistently.

And a choke job by Hurkacz with three set points in the breaker against Novak and loses it. Down one set. It’s amazing how Djokovic never loses a tiebreak.

That result makes me actually angry. I get it Djokovic is good. But don't just give him freebies like that.

It’s how much of a mental edge he has over everyone at this point. Players just do really stupid things against him and whenever they do have set points especially, they kind of freak out thinking they are going to take a set off of him at a slam. Hurkacz really blew that one.

And another choke job by Hurkacz in the second set breaker. Up 5-4 with two serves to take that one and blows both. Manages to mini break and then proceeds to get broken right back. Really should be up 2 sets to love and here we are with him down 2-0.

I don't think Djokovic was even been playing that well. Hurcacz did a great job keeping points short, not letting Djokovic get into a rhythm and gave himself a chance. Just couldn't capitalize.

It's like watching Tiger in his prime. Everyone else just collapses mentally.

Hopefully Sinner can give him a match. He's had an all-time east draw. He's going to make the semifinals without playing a top 75 player. Unreal.
