Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Utah is a classic “one coach away” program. Just like the rest of us. Whitingham is 20 years older than CMC. I think the Clownzano/Wilner camp pumping the “easier route to the playoff” narrative is ******** cope. The lack of funds is going to catch up to sooner rather than later. You can’t stake a financial future on that play for Utah. Really only applies to Oregon imo.

Washington gets thrown around a lot as a “big dog national program” but I disagree. They are a big dog regional team in a region with generally ****** football. Two steps below the tOSU/Michigan/USC/ND/SEC gang imo. One step below OU/FSU/PSU/Oregon. On par with the Iowa/Miami/Texas brigade.

This is purely from a footballing results/results that can potentially be obtained.

First group is making the playoff quite often, chance to win it.

Second group great chance to make the playoff, unlikely to win it.

Third group hoping to pop up and make the playoff once every so often.

I think back when both were WAC/MWC and state’s population boom started there was obvious untapped cfb potential that Utah did actually realize both in MWC and Pac. We saw it up close when they drubbed us in Ames.

Now with both of them moving “up” I totally agree w the “one coach away” thing. Either BYU or Utah could be great or suck with any given coaching hire. I don’t see it as some automatic winning situation but it is slightly better for both programs than some other historically major conference schools.

I’m failing to see any advantage Utah has long term over BYU and the fact that fandom seems somewhat even in the state AFTER Utah’s multi decade run of fb success (and byu being mostly just average) suggests BYU is the bigger get with higher ceiling.

He was an unlikeable ####, just like their fans!

He knows what he’s doing from an X and O/system standpoint. The system/identity centric schools can win in the Big 10 (Iowa, Purdue). Even if you’re jackass/racist you can get kids to look the other way when you win and get a baseline win track record.

Does anyone have any insight as to why the PAC 10 chose to expand with the Utes vs the Cougars? Sounds like both schools are very heavily religious etc.

Big difference between a private, religious school and a public school that is in a religious area.

Notre Dame doesn’t appear to be too handicapped by it and the Big 12 chose TCU over Houston previously. This makes the PAC sound bad.

BYU will NOT play games on Sundays. That is what the rumor always was. I think it was an excuse because many of those schools don't want any school that has religious backgrounds at all. Why I really question SMU being pulled in. I think that could be an issue for Cal.

Utah also wants to stay in the PAC because their road to the CFP just got easier now that USC is gone. They have a chance to be the big dog in the conference.
They will until "easy road" means no auto bid for the Pac12 because it has no more prestige than AAC or MWC.

The 6 auto qualifier rule is only guaranteed for the first 2 years of the 12 team playoff. USC, UCLA, UT and OU know the score and didn't seek the easy path.

IMO Utah & ASU are among the Pac12 schools that feel they are top 40 programs and hope Big10 or SEC are in their future. The have confidence to be patient- knowing they'll have a Power Conference home.

I think the panic is starting to set in. This is the most pessimistic I’ve heard this guy.

I listen to this almost daily, he’ll be back to “Glorious PAC 12 make best moves smartest ways” on Monday.

Can already hear his opening, “after having a weekend to reflect on the current PAC situation, here’s why I’m leaning towards the PAC adding 8 teams from the Big 12”

Our beloved Conference of Champions?

Dude.

Good point. Pessimistic probably wasn’t the right word. More like exasperated/ PO’d.

I like that guy. I totally get he’s playing to a specific audience. I’m sure if you asked him on the side he would say “we’re ******”.

I like this guy too. I have listened to a number of his podcasts. He doesn't rip on other conferences, notably the Big 12, like other podcasts such as the Monty Show ripping non-stop on the Pac. He is realistic and isn't constantly talking sunshine about the Pac unlike Clownzano.

Saw that BYU had a Big 12 celebration on their tv channel and watched long enough to see their women's cross country coach saying she was excited for the weekend of the ISU game due to it being Diwali....and glad its at home because no one wants to go to Ames, Iowa

If anyone knows negative recruiting, I’m sure it’s BYU.

It's not just rumor - BYU refuses to play on Sunday. the NCAA tournament literally chooses to cater to BYU and alter entire brackets if necessary to not place them in any Friday/Sunday sites because of this.
