That's cool. Hope you have a lot of great memories there!

Just not a fan of brutalist architecture in general. To me this pic is only missing a hammer and sickle, but I'm sure it looks more inviting in person.

If CY can't be turned around then I have no soft spot for the building and it's time for hard, cold economics to take over.

Of course CY can be turned around. It just requires an understanding of the building's beauty and importance and the willingness and dedication to save it. New isn't always better. In fact, it would be a waste of resources to tear down CY Stephens

To be honest l, CY and Hilton look OK I guess. But the other brutalist buildings on campus, like Ross and Science II, always get comments about how ugly they are when I take people to campus who have never been before. I've gotten 1 or 2 comments from people about Scheman and CY looking ugly as well.

I think it was cool for 1970. I'm not sure it's worth much today. Especially if there's no will to keep it up.

Is it going to help the front door back door argument with all the new parking spots added north of CY and all the way down to the north side of Hilton?

On the parking map it almost looks like there are enough parking spots north of CY and sown towards Hilton to fill up CY? I haven't been north of CY to see the parking since it was expanded so I don't know for sure how it is laid out now.

Parking for Stephens events has been designated for the lot immediately south (across Center Drive) of it. This A! or what will be A2 I think this fall. The lot to the west and slightly northwest (F1) is for handicap access spots and higher level donors. Apart from the fact that this parking is much closer to the auditorium, B1 is considered athletics parking and will have priority. Not sure what will happen to theA1 and F1 parking when CyTown is fully implemented and in place.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know the sections were allocated. If there are no sports events then B-1 I assume can be used for CY? That is a lot of parking.
 
I have a question about Cy-Town.
Will there be a flood evacuation plan?
Has this been discussed?

Morill Hall wasn't worth much when I came to ISU in 1991.
Old Botany (now Catt Hall) wasn't worth much when I came to ISU in 1991.

Neither of those buildings were architecturally significant for their time, yet they are still fixtures on Central Campus because they preserve something important.

That is often true, however when one concert has a reputation as the best venue in an area and they know how to successfully put on shows and another new venue hasn't proven it yet promoters will often sacrifice a few seats to stay with the sure thing and not be the guinea pig with the new venue. That was the situation at the time.

And while WF is right under 17,000 for concerts Hilton is actually over 15,000 depending on floor configuration.

Target Center and Xcel are both in the same market. By your reasoning Target Center should only get 1 show for every 99 shows Xcel does. Xcel has about 2,000 more seats than Target Center.

I believe you 100% on all of these items. Long story short though, WF Arena is in direct competition with Hilton. If you wanted to look at the list of shows that hit WF over the last 15 years, and tell me which one probably would have played better at Hilton, I would be open to it but I think it's time as a venue for big shows had passed anyway, and this is coming from somebody who saw several there in the mid-90s to mid-aughts.

I like architecture. I've been on several architecture tours in Chicago, NY, etc. I don't like buildings with a lot of exposed concrete, I am not a Manatts groupie, sue me.

Those buildings are much nicer than the brutalist architecture IMO. We should do what we can to save CY because it would be a loss but the brutalist architecture is just not good.

For CY you would want to do something to kind of hide the loading area and just repair the inside.

Scheman should be dramatically remolded or replaced if not feasible. It just isn’t built for todays uses.
