Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

This entire thing is a cluster **** for SDSU and the Pac. It is not as if they did not know that SDSU had a hard deadline or $17 million penalty. I think CW (and others) nailed it. There is no acceptable media deal that GK can sell to the remaining Pac schools at this time. So now his efforts to line up SDSU (and SMU) as either expansions or replacements is blowing up in his face. If it weren't a G5 school, would be hilarious for Yormark to step in and snatch SDSU away.

SDSU isn’t exactly helping themselves either.

Isn't it likely that Colorado has given GK a deadline to present a deal? I'm sure the football team wants clarity now given that recruiting season is heating up.

I think it’s entirely likely schools have given the PAC minimum parameters on what they would accept, and a date this needs to be done by. Of course any of the 4 corners considering leaving for the B12 want to see what the PAC offers, but they’re not going to wait forever.

Deion wants and needs to be in Texas.
This may or may not be true, but if CU is letting the desires of an inexperienced football coach who hasn't coached a single game for them drive their decision that would be dumb. This is a much bigger decision with a long list of factors to be considered before you think about the recruiting strategy of a coach that will be gone in 5 years win or lose.

That said, I think it would be best for CU to come back.

If 1) the Big 12 has offered the 4 corners an open ended invitation with no response deadline, and 2) the 4 corners first preference is to remain in PAC, then why wouldn't the 4 corners wait forever?

Well their media contract does expire at some point lol. So they can’t wait “forever”. Typically you give at least a years notice when leaving a conference, which is quickly approaching. These talks have already been going on a year, which feels like forever already.

Because their current TV deal expires June 30, 2024.

I would assume each school is going through a budgeting process like WSU, so the realities of Big12 vs. Pac12 TV $ will get real, real fast.

But they can't come alone. They need a dance partner since a 13 team conference with a 9 game conference schedule doesn't work. So, is CU and UCONN worth expanding? CU and SDSU? Or would the Big12 just tell CU told hold firm until UA makes a decision?

Personally, I don't see CU as a big enough catch to have them come with a mid-major. They're certainly a nice secondary piece, but they are not a headliner that can pick just anyone.

In an era where we're doing unbalanced schedules anyway with no round robin, you could probably still make it work by having an unbalanced number of games and deciding championships based on winning %.

Its not ideal, but nothing about this giant conference stuff is.

I think they take CU without a partner, because that opens the door for other corner 4 schools to make the move. If other Pac10 schools don't follow in 60 days, then BY moves on UConn (as long as ESPN/Fox are willing to pay).

I don't feel CU needs to be a "big catch". They need to be part of the long-term puzzle in a 20-24 team 3rd Power Conference that will crystalize over the next 6-12 years.

However, 13x8 would be 52 conference games (instead of 54 in the 12x9 format). A guaranteed open week during conference play, and a 4th non-con game.

It's not about unbalanced in that situation. The math doesn't allow for 13x9; you have to have an even number as the total.

You'd probably need to guarantee that a large % of those extra noncon games were still P5 games, to justify keeping the per-team payouts the same.

I'm not sure how the math works on that. I'd be curious how close you could get to that. Maybe everyone's playing at least 9 and some are playing a 10th (give those to teams without a P5 noncon rivalry game)

I think the math would work and would be creative.

Schedule a game between one of the current 12 teams and CU each year. For one of the current 12 teams it would be a non-con game and for CU a conference game.

North Carolina and Wake have played non-conference a few times in years where the ACC didn't schedule them.

((Number of teams) x (number of games/team)) / 2 = total number of conference games

(14 x 9) / 2 = 63
(13 x 9) / 2 = 58.5 [not possible]
(12 x 9) / 2 = 54
(13 x 8) / 2 = 52
