Need Podcast Recommendations

If you’re into Mafia history or current mob topics I like The Sitdown and also The Original Gangsters.

I tend to like edutainment stuff, with some lean towards financial and behavioral economics topics; the ones I tend to listen to most / find consistently interesting are:
Freakonomics
Planet Money
The Journal (daily, relatively short episodes, from Wall St Journal)
Radiolab

Love Unnecessary Roughness for College football. It is a barstool podcast so they spend as much time messing around as they do actually talking football but I like the hosts and the conversations they have.

Basement Yard is a good comedic story telling podcast. Basically just two lifelong friends that sit around and talk with each other. Hard to explain the show but I always get a good laugh out of it.

Comedy + sports = Crime in Sports

They cover a lot of crime stuff, but also just some crazy things that have happened in sports.

The Dollop is a great history comedy show.

One guy prepares a deep dive into something from history, and reads it to his comedian friend who has no idea what the topic is before the show.

I love the Rewatchables and other Ringer podcast on current series. Not sure what I liked more, watching House of Dragons, or listening to the Ringers break down of the episodes.
Big fan of the ringer, I was going to recommend Plain English

I was going to post this one as well. Even though it gets a little too jokey/laughy for me at times, they do some really deep dives into history and historical figures. Two of my favorites were the ones they did on Ronald Reagan and John McCain. These were two political figures in my life I thought I was a lot more familiar with than I was.

I really liked Office Ladies when it first came out. I was a weekly listener for the first year or more. Much like the actual show, it really seemed to go downhill as it went on though. I know my 30-something male mind is not their target audience, but I got tired of all the random deep dive and lady-gossip stuff they would get into. They would do an hour-plus podcast and only actually talk about the show for what felt like 30% of that time.

It also gave me a "don't meet your heroes" moments with some of the cast. Ed Helms is boring AF to listen to, for example.

That being said, it's still probably the only podcast my wife and I can listen to together while in the car with the kids.

Agreed, its not as

Agreed. Some of the deep dives were cool but after awhile, it was less "behind the scenes" stuff that I wanted from the show and more deep dive or talking about their podcast itself.

If you like Carlins Hardcore History I would recommend History that Doesn't Suck. It is done by an actual history professor and focuses specifially on American History. I think its better than Hardcore History by a good margin. The use of primary sources is great. Its the best history podcast about the USA that Ive found.

Gastropod is an interesting look at food at the intersection of science and history.
I third Smartless if you're looking for something that doesn't require a lot of concentration.
I find The Great Fail interesting as it looks at the rise and fall of some businesses that made it big and then disappeared.

Totally agree. The format makes it awkward because it's basically standup comedy, but it's unique and fun for that reason too.

The ones about founding fathers are pretty enlightening too, compared to what common knowledge might say. Turns out Benedict Arnold wasn't the worst guy ever, and the musical about Alexander Hamilton is massively historically inaccurate.

I love this show too. There's one about professional tickling that is ridiculous and hilarious.

I LOVE The Ringer-Verse Podcasts (House of R and The Midnight Boys). The Ringer also has Trial by Content and a ton of other podcasts.

House of R in particular, with Mallory Rubin and Joanna Robinson, is fantastic for deep dives into Fantasy, Marvel, and other IP content.

If you are a fan of Harry Potter, Star Wars, Marvel, and Game of Thrones, The Ringer's former podcast, Binge Mode, is also incredible. Hosted by Mallory Rubin and Jason Concepcion (who has moved on to a different company and has his own podcast called X-Ray Vision, with similar content to Ringer-Verse). Jason was also the host of the official House of the Dragon podcast.
