Misc: Messi joins Inter Miami

The sport wasn't set up that way, people played soccer long before the English pyramid system was created. Even the first few years of the top tier of English soccer didn't have automatic relegation.
Do you think that they should get rid of the pyramid system and prevent clubs like Luton from being able to climb to success?

I guess I don't mind watching a game for the game's sake. Just because not every game has huge playoff implications doesn't make it "unwatchable."
What makes it unwatchable is how many of those teams make the playoff. Also, what's the point of finishing top of the table if it doesn't mean you're the champion?

No I think it's a cool thing, I'm just saying it's not like the sport of soccer was invented with automatic relegation, or even the beginning of what is now the Premier League.

Fair, but personally I just don't get the argument AGAINST pro/rel in America. Granted, I know it will never happen because the owners would refuse to risk losing money by relegation, and the MLS won't stop adding teams, but a dream is a dream.

I get this and even agree with it some what, but look at college basketball, being the Big 12 regular season champion means nothing, but college basketball is still pretty awesome and exciting.

I think the "argument" is just that the MLS was created by rich people to make money and relegation will cost them money. I agree it would be cool if the DM Menace could rise to the MLS.

My thoughts exactly. They really screwed it up too by giving a team to any city with a local government that would give them money for an expansion team too. When (if) the USL Des Moines team starts up, I'll go to a few games, but no way could I be an ultra due to not being able to rise up to the top tier league.

The European model of crowning a champion strictly based on the end of season table isn't followed by almost a third of leagues around the world including some in Europe. And when you extend it across all sports it is in the minority.

But finishing at the top of the table gives you the advantage to host throughout the playoff - a significant advantage.

In the US the following leagues use some sort of a playoff:
  • MLB (MiLB)
  • NBA (G League)
  • NFL (USFL, IFL)
  • NHL (AHL, USHL, NAHL, ECHL, SPHL, and others)
  • Pretty much all NCAA sports that crown a team champion
  • Major League Rugby
  • Lacrosse (PLL, NLL)
  • Volleyball (NVA)
And I am sure there are many more. Frankly, I wasn't able to find a single league in the U.S. that didn't have a playoff...

The fact that you’re comparing the #1 historic most played and most popular sport in that country with a league that technically started in the 19th century to soccer in the US which had only been a country for about 100 years at the time English professional soccer was born is ridiculous. The MLS hasn’t even been a league for as long as I’ve been alive.

Just admit you’re a hater and move on with your life. Your arguments basically boil down to “why isn’t this 3 year old as tall as this 27 year old? What’s the deal with that?”.

Relegation and promotion system makes soccer more fun. It won’t happen in America any time soon because MLS is what it is today because team owners dumped a bunch of money into it, which I understand as they don’t want to risk losing money. However, relegation system incentivizes competition way more and allows for more areas of the country to have a pro team, which ultimately would help the sport grow.

Regarding Messi. Dude is absolutely gonna dominate at the MLS level.

Another aspect is the competition format. United States is HUGE and the cost of traveling can annihilate smaller team's budget unless you have a competition format that helps sustain the financing. But DSM team would want to play LA Galaxy and LAFC to attract spectators instead of Sporting KC or MN United or Chicago Fire.

Compare our situation with this: the distance between southernmost and northernmost Premiership teams Bournemouth to Newcastle is 350 miles. Serie A: Milan to Lecce is 1.5 hour flight, Milan to Cagliari is 1.5 hour flight.

Brazil says hi. You can do regional pods at the lower level if you wanted to minimize travel, then winner of each pod would play in the playoffs.

It is very doable, but won’t happen for MLS. Too much money already invested into it by current franchises.

But we were just told in this thread that the whole world is laughing at us for having a playoff...

Not me, and personally I think it works well for lower level leagues. For the top tier I personally like it being round robin champion with most points. Cups already fill the void for a playoff.

This makes absolutely no sense. Win more = more money.

The Crew ownership group that took over from Precourt has a long history of investing and growing teams and clubs, they want to win, they are local, they want the local people to have a winner. It’s not as cynical as you think it is.

Also the US has our own version of the FA Cup, where every pro team is eligible, even the teams at DM Menace level. Check it out some time.
Went to the KC match last night. Product on the pitch wasn’t as bad as I expected, but still pretty average. The ultras, however, were extremely cringe. Biggest laugh I had of the night was when I was watching the game by a railing, KC scores, the place is going limbs, fireworks are going off, and some 40-something soccer mom standing next to me asks me “Did we score??”

I think what you’re seeing from Messi’s first 3 games is just how inferior MLS is in comparison to the rest of the world. It’s almost equivalent to playing FIFA on easy mode, that’s how ridiculous he’s made his MLS opponents look.

Which could be a good thing for MLS in the long run? If your an aging star you can come here, make bank and feel like a 21 year old again scoring at will.

Best part of Messi's game is that it has never been reliant on pure athleticism, so he will likely have a more successful latter part of his career than most.
