Caleb Grill has entered the portal and committed to Mizzou

I can’t imagine playing for Bob Huggins being a positive for someone struggling with their mental health.
His being in the portal so soon and shopping for another school makes me wonder about the whole "mental health" thing with him.

I'm not making light of mental health issues at all. But it seems a little strange to me that after he talked about being possibly suicidal in his farewell Tweet to ISU, in a few weeks time he's now back to committing to playing hoops for another school.

I was under the impression he'd be taking some time off to deal with his issues, but apparently not.

Seems a little disingenuous to me from what I know about people with debilitating mental health issues, but whatever I guess.

Well, if he wants to play, he kind of has to be close to committing right now. That schedule doesn't wait for anybody.

I guess my pushback would be that mental health stuff doesn't always follow a consistent schedule, you can make progress quickly or extremely slowly. So much is dependent on each person and their exact/specific circumstances.

While I don't doubt people take advantage of it as an excuse, as someone who has dealt with what Caleb described, it would be pretty gross. Maybe my own experience makes me too willing to just accept it at face value, but I just don't think any of us can really speak on his progress one way or another.

His mental health should be the top priority, not playing 1 more year of hoops.

If he's good to go, he's good to go. Maybe it was something where he just needed an adjustment to medication or something similar.

Again, I was under the impression that his situation was pretty dire and that he'd take some time off.

I'm sure he'd get a medical redshirt for a mental health type of situation regardless of his current eligibility.

There's a time crunch. I wouldn't put myself in the spot of judging how someone works out their mental health, especially when deadlines are ruthlessly tight.

I agree with what you said. I just would think that someone who was possibly suicidal in a high pressure environment like college hoops might not want to return to that environment so soon.

But hopefully his therapist/doctors know best.

I can only judge it by the people I've known with similar issues. And in those cases, they weren't magically fine in a few weeks.

But every person/case is different.

I have bipolar disorder and between 17-22 I was on like probably a dozen different combos of meds until they figured out a balance that works. With most mental health drugs it takes a few weeks to build a level up in the blood and then maintain it. So you don't always necessarily know what is going to work or if something is working for a month or 2. But caleb is in the age category where issues pop up for the first time too. That being said your behavior is still your behavior in most cases barring a few instances where you're mentally ill enough to not be in the driver's seat, which usually results in a pysch hold or something.

Where did he say he's magically fine? He's making necessary decisions in a tight spot.
He's returning to the same type of environment where he had all his previous issues. It looks to me like he plans to join his new team right away and play in the Fall.

That's a really quick turnaround from being a locker room cancer, picking fights, taking cheap-shots with opposing players, refs etc., getting T'd up in those situations which cost the team wins, and becoming hostile towards his coaches and teammates alike. All to the point where he was kicked off the team. All that's only what's public. And then he hinted that he was possibly suicidal. That's a lot of baggage to have sorted out in a few weeks.

But hey, good luck to him. I think the 3 guys we just got in the portal will all be better players and teammates when it's all said and done.

Idk how long he’s had these issues, but he seemed to keep it under control until the injury. Getting physically healthy and a change of scenery could help him a ton with his mental health. A place like Mizzou that’s pretty close to home still probably wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Geez. He already looks like a hillbilly extra in Deliverance.

Im pretty sure its well known that Bob is actually a very compassionate coach for his players

he's just a psycho at times on the sidelines
I don’t doubt that, and I do like Huggins. But that back and forth personality wouldn’t seem quite stable enough for what Caleb needs. TJ seems pretty player-friendly to me as it is.
