Ryan Clanton to be new offensive line coach

Can anyone get Ben Bruns to practices or the Spring Game and then do an interview for Cyclone Fanatic? I have a feeling that he'd give an honest opinion about changes and be able to determine if all of this is just coach speak.

Based on the interviews, there are a lot of signs that this is a real change. Simplifying things, teaching new techniques, teaching what the defense is going to do so this is why our OL is doing this.

Even if they aren't becoming 'Elite' players, it's more true for any position group on the field that technique goes a long long ways on the Offensive line. You can only get so big and so fast, eventually it's all about body mechanics. Clanton talks the talk. I think we will see improvement, if anything I think Clanton is teaching these guys how to fire off the ball and that should equate to better running lanes alone. There's also something to be said for perception. Even if it's only slight growth, the players see it as large gains. That breeds more intensity and commitment. Once you see positive gains, you crave more.

I do like when he talks about his players and calls them gigantic. When a huge dude says someone is gigantic, they're a force.

I'm encouraged by him talking about new running schemes combined with the bolded emphasis above, and mentioning those have been some of the most explosive plays so far this spring

I'm just hoping we don't have lineman completely whiff on blocks multiple times a game. We would see a defensive tackle unblocked right up the middle and Purdy was in scramble mode as soon as he got the snap. I can understand getting beat sometimes, but completely missing blocks like that drove me nuts.

It happens but in our case we clearly weren't locked in mentally. The penalties are an even bigger indicator of that as well.

Ben has a more than full time job in WI. We are stuck with his FIL

Personally, I think QB position is more important. Our OL wasn't really that much different than years prior. We lacked consistency at both QB and RB last year. RB was largely because of injuries. We need Hunter to take a big step this year or someone else needs to beat him out.

I have watched Cyclone football for 50+ years, 90% of the time we were at a significant disadvantage in the Big 12 at the QB position. Purdy changed that. We can't go back to having substandard QB play.

I think Purdy and Breece (and even David before that) covered up mediocre to bad OL play. Hunter wasn't the problem last year, he just couldn't/didn't scramble around or make the heady plays like Brock did. He still has room to improve, but I still think it ultimately comes down to the OL improving.

Yeah, those podcasts are the reason I would love one based of spring practice. I bet he can use some vacation time to support fans. No better reason to use vacation.

I like the guy, looks like an excellent coach. But I am trying to think of something more meaningless to me than this interview after a few practices.

Just listened to the the CFVT Podcast. I'm in love. I feel now like we will be in the running for the national championship. Realistically we will be able to consistently compete. hopefully based o the spring practices we will come out of the gate faster as well. couple that with a ST coordinator we could/should be back in bowl season.

I've seen a lot mediocre quarterbacks successfully serve as game managers behind dominant offensive lines where all they're asked to do is distribute without turning the ball over.

The scheme thing is huge to me. ISU's running game has been EXTREMELY bland as far as scheme goes, and has relied a ton on having tackle-breaking savants back there to make it work.

A lot of that comes back to the o-line, but there's also just been very little misdirection or really anything other than the (technically) RPO stuff that the QB basically never pulls to run or throw.

I'm with you here. Sure, I'd be ecstatic if Kohl came out and pushed for the job, but I think people generally underrate Hunter on here given HOW poor the rest of the offense was around him. He threw multiple should-be game winners on beauties down the field in clutch moments that bounced off WR's hands.

If those get caught, I'm guessing people aren't nearly as down on him. A competent O-line and running game is a big key for this team next year regardless of who's at QB.

If those get caught we likely win 2 more games, make a bowl, and none of these big structural changes would’ve happened.

I think Hunter has talent, but he really struggled last year. I am confident we would have gone to a bowl with Purdy. We need better QB play this year to be successful. Better OL play and healthy running backs will obviously help Hunter.

Reading between the lines, the interview is a borderline brutal critique of the former OL coach and scheme. I wonder if Campbell was pleased with this.

As for next year, I'll just wait and see. How much change can you squeeze out of established players and program tendencies?

Honestly, the less influence CMC has, the better IMO. Just let Nate do his thing, and let Clanton do his thing…. keep your hands off for the most part. At least try it and see how it works out this year. You can be a great CEO by just letting your employees do their job.
