***Official 2023 Transfer Thread***

Not really, people use 1-5 now because it’s just different now. Most teams don’t use the traditional PG-SG-SF-PF-C that they used to. 1-5 covers that. Could be three guards and two forwards, four guards and a Center… and so on.

But yes, you can play the 5 without being a Center.
1-5 is the literally the numerical version of PG-SG-SF-PF-C. Playing the 5 is the equivalent of playing center

Position less basketball is a great concept, but the reality is taller players have advantages over shorter players at certain spots on the court and quicker players have advantages in other spots/situations.

So by using the 1-5 indicates physical or basketball skill-sets. Very few players are perfect and can do everything.

Sure Momcilovic can play on the perimeter and shoot 3 on offense all day long. But he doesn't have the quickness to guard small ball 3's. Not a criticism- I wouldn't want Tre King, Kunc, Ossuniyi, Ward or Jones to be the primary defender on a Rice, George, Gdick, OBannon, etc.

IMO being able to switch 1-5 is more coach speak vs reality. Good coaches and players excel when they get mismatches of posts(4/5) on guards (1-3).
Again, the position call outs are dumb. TJ is not calling a play to have his "4" get a mismatch on the opposing "3". Instead, he would be saying hey lets get Tre King who is 6'7 230 the ball on the post vs. Gradey **** who hasn't found the weight room yet. This is a mismatch no matter what imaginary position you choose to assign to either player.

I guess you don't watch much basketball.

What's the intent of the PNR, weave or any screening offense. Create size/speed mismatches. Why do coaches talk about a player being able switch 1-3 or 1-5? Because coaches use screens to get an opposing post defending their stud scoring guard.

Really good offenses create player mismatches. A guy like Osun doesn't accidently find himself guarding a Carr, Hunter or Rice- the coach runs plays to create those mismatches.

I'll stick to numbers to describe skill/physical attributes. Zebra can't change his stripes.

I've had season tickets for 17 years.

I agree with your next 2 paragraphs, that's nothing contrary to what I previously said.

Just know that when Tre, Milan, and Omaha are out there together.... Nobody is "playing the 5" and it'll be alright.

Gotta stop being obsessed with the ”3s, 4s, 5s” etc. Apart from the pg this is mostly position-less basketball. We do not need to assign who is going to ”play the 5” nor do we need to have a 5 on the floor.
Mostly true but the 3, 4 positions are the largest gap. King and Momcilovic shouldn't be asked to guard a guard. Biliew can guard anyone

What is the transfer portal "dead period" ending Thursday, when some schools have already landed transfers?

What players are we ACTUALLY in on? Like the players also interested and potential visits to Ames? I haven't heard of anyone yet..... Just the original list of 10-15 that we reached out too a few weeks ago. Lots of good named guards out there would be awesome to get 2 of them.

This seems to necessitate the mandatory reply that, until ISU officially releases visitor names and dates, you're stuck paying for premium access to know this

How about someone that has access or some sort of knowledge lets us know then, hence my question of I haven't heard anything... lol

They might not be playing the 5, but one of the 3 will most often have to guard an opponent 5 and have the skills/technique to guard a player around the basket.

Sure there are teams like Texas and Kansas that didn't start a traditional 5, but most other teams did- ISU, KSU, OSU, OU, BU, TCU.

Using 1-5 defines skill-sets a coach looks for when building a roster. In Steve Prohm's roster building he didn't feel the need to have a traditional 5. But so far TJ seems to like a traditional 5 as either a Conditt, Osun, Ward or Jones was on the court 90% of the game over the last couple years.
