Eli King enters the Portal

To be fair, theres been one coach since Fred and he did… not so great. So TJ literally used two straight years of transfers to take his teams to the tournament twice. Also, Gabe and Brockington were very nice transfer additions.
Out of pure necessity as he inherited one of the worst rosters in cbb. It was certainly a great job but as I said most of the guys were meh. Holmes was just never consistent and Osun was too match up dependent to be effectively offensively.

Anyways, it’s not “transfer U” when we’re bring guys like Babb, Clyburn, and Kane

Nader and Burton did well.

His shot was concerning to me but I was interested to see how he would develop. I’d say it would be a fair trade with St. Thomas if they gave us Rhode and we give them Eli

It’s also a completely different college landscape. Used to be all about one and dones, now it’s all about transfers. So the talent in that pool is picked from by the highest bidders. It wasn’t as common to transfer and Fred was really the first coach to utilize it.

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at or argue?
Iowa St hasn't been as good on transfers since Hoiberg? Well no ****, Hoiberg was a forefather when it comes to basketball transfers.
Past that, TJ has been pretty damn good, even if it's "out of necessity." He's not in the tournament the last two years without Brockington, Gabe, and Grill.

College basketball is weird now. King 100% should have redshirted, it was clear he wasn’t ready for big 12 basketball yet. It could be a different story after a year of development but apparently college basketball players don’t have time for that. It’s playing time right away or leave. Now, we have to get lucky in the portal(which we never do get the top targets anymore)
He probably should have redshirted, but we were so thin at guard that we kind of needed him available. Remember early in the year when Lipsey was on a snap count?

That is true, but you’d think with all the add covid year players we’d be able to get some solid pieces from the portal.

And then there's Tim Floyd who brought in Willoughby, Pratt and Cato and guys like Tinsley, Horton, Nurse and all sorts of super memorable ISU players.

The foundation of having 4 year guys is helpful for the foundation though. Hopefully the Lipseys and Watsons are in that mix.
Maybe I misunderstood but Floyd did not bring in Tinsley or Horton.

I get that but he ended up playing 31 minutes and lost a year of eligibility because of it. It would be nice if the redshirt rule was like college football. Then maybe more would go that route.

This may illustrate how difficult it is for a perceived high level HS athlete (in any sport), to be a “Go To” athlete in college. Where you may compete with the best of the best, and not be the perfect fit - for you or the university.
With No fault of the athlete or university, he/she may just be looking to fit in.
Been there.

I don’t want to be too negative, but we haven’t really won a transfer portal since Hoiberg was coaching. Only a handful have been somewhat successful

All the one and done season guys were meh besides Brockington and Gabe is the only one to actually play out his career here.
I’d argue that we won the past two years. Other than Hunter, every other player that has left basically went down a level to get more playing time. Personally, I’d take Holmes, Osun, Ward over Hunter, Enaruna and Jackson.

For what it's worth, Solo Young was a 4-year.

Players like Eli leave, whether their decision or "mutual," but there still need to be 10th-13th guys on the bench. So if there is potential to develop and contribute by 3rd/4th years, why not keep that guy?

I agree that getting past the covid year chaos might settle things.
