From watching them in warm ups, maybe some garbage time, to then playing a role.
I feel now with NIL officially here, these trends already happening, etc. it would be a great research study for someone to do to get insights into HS and transfer portal recruiting strategies by coaches, high schooler perspectives on being a prospect, etc. Like I wonder if someone like Eli or similar skillset goes into the process assuming they won't finish at their first school?
It will be interesting if coaches get creative with HS recruits.
I thought Bob Knight took a unique approach about 25 years ago. He convinced some "recruiting reaches" to go to prep school for their 5th HS year and then attend Indiana. I specifically recall his son Patrick and Tom Coverdale. I believe there were others.
Do we see a return to the historical practice of coaches placing kids at a JUCO. Would a kid like Eli who got minimal minutes have benefited from playing a year at JUCO. If he plays well then he signs with ISU, if he doesn't then Eli has a better feel based on his JUCO play at what level he fits.
Best for both parties on this one. Eli had a long way to go and would probably be wise to move down a level. Truly wish him the best at his next stop!

I mean, this is just the way things are now. If you don’t play at all as a FR, you are most likely transferring. The good thing for us is with TJ, I have full faith that we’ll get more from the portal than we lose.
ISU was dubbed transfser U, both on the in side and the out side,, we have been dealing with this for like 10 years already. Nothing has really changed.
Hard to really comment on this unless you were sitting in on practices.

I'm guessing he was not the 3 point shooter we need or he'd have gotten a chance when we were 1-19 from three late in the most important game of the season.

College basketball is weird now. King 100% should have redshirted, it was clear he wasn’t ready for big 12 basketball yet. It could be a different story after a year of development but apparently college basketball players don’t have time for that. It’s playing time right away or leave. Now, we have to get lucky in the portal(which we never do get the top targets anymore)

10 years? Tim Floyd came to ISU almost 30 years ago.
I don’t want to be too negative, but we haven’t really won a transfer portal since Hoiberg was coaching. Only a handful have been somewhat successful
All the one and done season guys were meh besides Brockington and Gabe is the only one to actually play out his career here.
Which one? Minnesota or Towson St? I have a better feeling about Towson St Battle personally.
And then there's Tim Floyd who brought in Willoughby, Pratt and Cato and guys like Tinsley, Horton, Nurse and all sorts of super memorable ISU players.
The foundation of having 4 year guys is helpful for the foundation though. Hopefully the Lipseys and Watsons are in that mix.
This is the new era of college basketball. Until I see who makes it back to school next fall I just assume everyone will transfer.
On the other hand I just expect the freshman who are good to get big NIL deals somewhere else. Weird era!
