Question for those who know about such things, what do they do with all the old concrete? Shove it in a landfill somewhere or is there a way to recycle?

It will get ground up into gravel, would be my guess.

Lot of times they have a machine that grounds it up right as it being torn out. Not sure if they did that in this case though.

Anyone else get a weird sense of satisfaction seeing those old busted parking lots getting pulverized?

Going to be very weird to have nice lots now. Use to looking at those busted up, badly painted, hole filled lots.

Very interesting. Not on my Google Maps. Not a cache thing. Wondering if their data farms are not totally in sync.

I think all the trees are going to get ripped out in this project. I'm sure they will bring in new ones.

Wha saddens me is that I used to walk through all those exact same trees as a student.

If they're raising the lots 5', that's a hell of lot of fill, but I guess they can grind the old stuff right there and use it as fill, but I imagine they still have to bring in tons and tons, wonder where they will get it.

They are hauling it to Iowa City.

Pretty sure it can be both, concrete can be crushed back down into gravel

I'm guessing they are going to grind the asphalt onsite and truck it out. Don't think I've ever seen recycled asphalt used as fill (but I'm a structures guy not a dirt work guy). I know a lot of plants nowadays will use recycled asphalt in their mixes where they can. Or they use it for a road topping.

As far as the concrete, they could crush it onsite and use it as base. Or just send it off to be crushed somewhere and sell it to somebody as cheap gravel. Recycled concrete was a big thing in Houston for generic fill if you aren't looking for some specific engineering property.
