The only downside I can think of is the program falling out of relevance after Few is no longer the coach. As long as that program continues as a top basketball brand, I don't really see a downside.
That legit can happen to any basketball program, look at Louisville, Georgetown, Indiana, nova, etc. Losing an awesome coach can always set a program back a couple years. The zags have built a pretty good brand and I don’t know if few is leaving anytime soon
Sure, but I think its much more of a downside risk for a tiny school that has only really had success under one coach.
Like, most P5 schools at least have a floor of an audience of their own fans when they're down. Gonzaga's floor is much, much lower
Yep totally agree but I bet they get added for only a couple mil. At that price it’s hard to see a downside.
What about when they hire Tommy Lloyd away from Arizona due to him getting sick of playing Q3 and Q4 games exclusively on Apple Tv in front of 12 fans?
And I'm not sure their floor is as low as some think. Incredibly wealthy alumni base, great facilities, basically a blank check from Nike. They check damn near every box.

And would that 'blank check' continue if Gonzaga isn't consistently a top team?
Article quoted the AZ President as saying the streaming/linear has to be at worst 50/50.
The "Monty Show" is saying Utah has told the Big 12 "Thanks, but we aren't an academic fit."

Not sure, if the donor base is there then it’s likely to maintain. Creighton as an example maybe.
It will be interesting if it's just Gonzaga MBB or all their sports join the Big12. And by adding Gonzaga, do we see other non-football school(s) added to expose the Big12 to new markets. There could be a number of schools from the Big East that would make sense.
It's not the norm for a school to bounce between conferences like UConn, but there could be contractual language spelling out conditions for Gonzaga's continued Big12 membership.
But at this time UCLA, Arizona and Gonzaga are the 3 biggest college basketball brands on the west coast. So adding Gonzaga seems like a win/win as I would expect ESPN & FOX are on board.
It would have to be all sports, right? I don't think you can split off your basketball program by NCAA rules plus what league is going to want them without basketball?
From reading the Gonzaga boards since the Big 12 interest, they generally are pleased with going to the Big 12. There are more "meh" posters than I was expecting however. They identify more with the Big East but know travel would be more.
