We haven't checked a bag in a long long time. Depending on the weather we can survive on a carryon (and they clear the most restrictive of carry ons) and the personal item bag. We don't like hanging out in the check bag line or in line to pick it up.
You have younger kids which makes it more difficult in ways and easier in ways. They require more things but their clothes is tiny so it doesn't take up much space. We likely will on a trip later this year but for the short trips we normally do if we can't get everything on in a carryon and personal bag we are packing wrong.
As someone that always has to lug a laptop around with them, I can't stand dealing with that bag and a carryon. Last time I tried to fly was for the Alamo Bowl and AA wanted $50 to check a bag which is ridiculous. Of course my flight was cancelled because of rain so I didn't have to deal with it.We haven't checked a bag in a long long time. Sun country hits you for carry ons also. So when you fly you have to see if the price is only $50 more for delta or American, they are actually cheaper than other. Delta has better seats but American let’s you pick the seat right away.As someone that always has to lug a laptop around with them, I can't stand dealing with that bag and a carryon. The airlines have only themselves to blame. When they started charging for luggage they didn't enforce the carryon restrictions so people just started bringing everything as carryon. Then they started gate checking carryon bags for free when there wasn't enough room for all the carryon bags. So people started bringing their luggage as carryon because they knew they could get it checked for free.So freakin tired of people that bring a carry on, a huge backpack, and like 2-3 bags on their arms when getting on a plane. They take forever to get on the plane take up a ton of bin space. Laughed at a couple that did this on my flight back last night from Dallas. They got to DSM and we’re walking out and the guy goes “I forgot a bag”, his wife goes, “we aren’t going back to get it!” I wanted to tell him, “that’s what you get!” People are to freaking cheap to put $30 down to check their luggage. With the apps anymore you can track it. I just can’t get over how airlines don’t enforce the one carry one rule anymore.
I was on a flight when you could check a bag for free. This dude comes on with the worlds largest duffle bag and throws it into the over head and 40% sticking out. He was the last in. The flight attendant was closing hatches and when she came upon it she was ticked and asked whose it was, like 10 people pointed at him. She chewed him out and made him check it up front and talked about charging him.The airlines have only themselves to blame. I was on a flight once where a young couple had the entire overhead filled with their stuff with more stuffed under the seats in front of them. It took them forever to gather up their stuff and try to get it down the aisle. There is absolutely no way they should have been allowed to carry that much junk on board.
Your wife must not pack everything but the kitchen sink like mine. We haven't flown in a few years but the last time our kids could handle their own bag and that was a big difference in how we could pack.We haven't checked a bag in a long long time. Used to. Now she has curtailed it back some. Plus as women age, they either feel they need more or less, it doesn’t stay the same. My wife apparently needs less.Your wife must not pack everything but the kitchen sink like mine. They are usually the same people that will ram their chair back as soon as they get in their seatThis is exactly my point. I'm to the point where if they say, "Please put your smaller bags under your seat to allow room for the larger roller bags" F'em! Why should I stuff my back pack under my seat then have no legroom while others put two or more items in the overhead compartment?
Suggestion for going to the grand kids, UPS it to them if it isnt coming back. That way you have it there and don’t have to handle luggage there and back. We're now in the market for good luggage. As in well-made, sturdy, dependable, and lighter-weight. When packing for grandkid trips we almost always need a checked bag for things that won't come home with us.
Suggestions on luggage brands?

We have thought about that. Around Christmas I'm not sure I trust delivery dates.Suggestion for going to the grand kids, UPS it to them if it isnt coming back. That way you have it there and don’t have to handle luggage there and back.
Ship it a week earlier than normal, your kid can just put it under the tree or hide them if needed. It makes life easier. We have thought about that. Around Christmas I'm not sure I trust delivery dates.
We have a Delta card (free luggage) and a Sun Country card (half-priced luggage) for our flights. Out of MSP, we really only fly Delta, Sun Country, or Southwest. Southwest includes luggage in the ticket price.Bought a camera bag for the Nikon and the 200-500mm lens last week. That took up over half of my carry-on backpack and it's not really a full camera bag, just a bag for the camera with that big lens mounted. Didn't even bring other lenses and still not much space left in the pack. I have a little personal bag, call it my "man bag", which is really a man purse for my airplane stuff like ear phones, passport, water, sun glasses, reading glasses, snacks, drugs, cell phone, and misc stuff. Backpack is in the overhead and man bag is with me under the seat. Checked bag is free since I have a Delta card (pretty much only fly them out of MSP anyway).
