MLB: Manny to the Cards?

That would be an awesome middle of the line-up...but who would be our lead off? What about Duncan, Rasmus, and Shumaker? We would almost surely have to trade one-two outfielders.

worry about that after they have the best 3/4 hitters together. maybe the best tandom since Ruth/Gehrig?

Greene or Kennedy would have to lead off. Or you put Ankiel in the lead off spot.

This doesn't happen for a couple reasons.

Reason #1 - Scott Boras is his agent and his players never take "discounts".

Reason #2 - The cardinals do not have the money to sign Manny. They haven't signed anyone because they are strapped for cash this winter, why would they go out and sign Manny??

Enjoy 4th place again.

It's not a money issue, it's the typical tightfisted management. I thougt mozeliak would be different, but it doesn't seem that is the case at all. Just find the cheap substitute (lohse, franklin, lidwick, etal) and make the best of them. As far as 4th, you seriously don't want to go there, from the perennial bottom feeders in chicago. Watch for carpenter and wainwright to be the top 1-2 pair in the NL. Add lohse and if all stay healthy, could be a great summer

Counting on guys that have been injured the past few years to be the top 1-2 in the NL??? I remember a team that use to think that with their pitchers. Trust me, you don't want to go down that road. Doesn't matter who you start because the cards bullpen is TERRIBLE!

Should be a fun summer, but not for the cards.

If you think Carpenter is going to be any great shakes coming off Tommy John, you're mistaken. It's going to take him until at least Memorial Day to round into form - the guy hasn't pitched in what, 2 years?

Wainright scare nobody. Lohse had a decent year last year, but how many other teams offered him 4 years and 40 million? If the Cardinals 1-3 starters are a guy with a busted arm and 2 guys would be the 4-5 starters on any other team, I like the Cubs chances.

101 years. just a reminder. checkmate.

Back to the thread - I would love to have Manny, but St. Louis needs smarter spending and it should be in the bullpen, lineup very solid, defense looks even better on paper, and the starting rotation has some potentially dominating guys.

the cards rotation is ****. its looking like the cubs are setting up to get Peavy, and will a loaded lineup, paired with what would be the best rotation in baseball, and an improved bullpen, the cubs will win 100+

Going back to the original topic, adding Manny would add some runs to the team, but he's a definsive liability. Manny belongs in the AL....

I agree that the cards rotation is ****. We might still see a change there(dear Mo Sign Ben Sheets). As far as the cubs go, call me when the peavy deal actually happens. I've heard about it all winter, and still nothing has gotten done. The rest of the rotation looks pretty stout though. Though how many games is your downgraded bullpen going to lose for them? Your line up looks tough I like the addition of Milton Bradley. But explain to me why your paying Aaron Miles 2.5 million this year and next when you could of kept DeRosa and Cedeno. I know the Cards have plenty of warts, but I don't think anyone should be sizing the Cubs for World Series Rings right now.

IMO the cubs pen has gotten better. heilman will be better than he was in 08, gregg is a solid set up guy, and marmol and samardzija will be even better because of more experience. still have wuertz who is decent, gaudin is there, hopefully get something out of vizcaino... probably no though. wood is the only loss... howry sucked *** so im glad hes gone

Maybe I'm in the minority of Cards fans, but I'm optimistic about the season. IF healthy, the rotation could be pretty good. Wainwright and Carp both have ace stuff. Lohse and Wellemeyer were pretty solid most of last season, and Piniero isn't awful for a #5. And Jaime Garcia showed some promise.

The bullpen is iffy once again, Trever Miller is an OK pickup, and I think some of the young arms in the bullpen could be pretty serviceable.

The lineup has a lot of potential:

Schumaker/Rasmus
Ankiel
Pujols
Ludwick
Glaus
Molina
Greene
Kennedy

It's not at the same level of the Cubs on paper, but I think it's up there as one of the best in the NL. I think STL has a good chance to compete all season and be right there at the end. Spring training can't get here soon enough.
