Coaching changes

I'm willing to give Greg Mac another four years to get me to the ncaa tournament....

Just think how long it took Tom and Keno Davis to get Drake to the tourney...And Tom and Keno know how to recruit and coach!!!

FOUR years? Seriously? I'm not someone who is quick to call for a coaches head, but it should take less then seven years for a coach to rebuild a program that had been to the the NCAA tournament just a year before the coach got there.

As much as I like Coach Mac and am willing to give him time, he is going to have to start showing:

1) more then he has shown me the past three years, NIT at least in the next two years- if he doesn't get it, he's gone

2) he can hold on to the players that he brings in. He isn't a horrible recruiter, but he can't keep many of the good players at ISU.

My biggest question is, why is Coach Mac so determined to run his offense a certain way, regardless of his players. If it's not working, change it. Maybe we can get Herman to be our BB offensive coordinator.

He's not...you need to look at who is on the floor and what they do best...Should answer your question.

Most of you on here were too young to remember, Wayne Morgan was more or less hired because no one ISU wanted wanted the job. He was given a token interview and then the real search began. After an extensive search Wayne was still in town and still willing to take the job.

You can't seriously talk about firing McDermott untill at least year 5. It can already be said that we fired two coaches prematurely, so you can't risk it at all on this one...

Getting rid of McD is not the answer! Let him get his kids in here an give him a chance. There was a mass exit of kids leaving because of the coaching change for 2 years. He is just starting to get his kids in and it will take time. Recruiting is looking good right now and there is allot of young talent to work with. Remember these are kids learning a system and playing in the Big 12, it not going turn around over night. Let the man do his job! Go CYCLONES

I've never been convinced that GMac is the guy but I will give him two more years. If there isn't an NIT berth in the first 5 years then I don't see how even the brightest optimist would want to hang on to the guy.

Brackins jumping would leave us basically no shot of reaching a postseason in the first contract. If CB stays, we should at least land in the middle third of the conference standings next year, aka in the NIT conversation. If not, GM might as well start browsing the MVC job openings or giving CB half of his salary to stay his senior year.

We all want McDermott to do well but ISU fans deserve a competitive basketball team. I have no complaints with the recruiting efforts but do have issues with the way the team presents itself on gameday. The guy is making $700k to ultimately win games and create excitement in the fan base, not to be a nice guy and create model citizens.

Like I said before, check back in about 2012. It is a hot dog race to see whether football makes a bowl before bball makes the NCAA. We are still looking for more dogs to add to our mush team.

So .500 ball (neutral nellie) will not cut it?

The most problematic transition in my opinion was the one from Eustacy to Morgan. With perfect 20/20 hindsight it is clear that BDV made it more of a short term priority to get Stinson and Blalock than to hire a coach that could have been a long term fix. Morgan had already failed at one head coaching job and we backed into that hire when other coaches apparently turned us down. I for one am willing to now take the slower, long term approach. I believe it will pay off. This is also why I like Pollard's black box, total secrecy approach in hiring head coaches.

If we don't make some noise next year I don't think it's too early to talk about it. But he gets through next year fo-sho.

COaching changes have been disastorous for our program. Floyd bolting on us killed the program.

What I do is look back over the the tenure of gmac and ask myself does any coach do do better with the same circumstances. That answe is no.

all you have to do is look at the Morgan hire to see how far our program had fallen. NO COACH wanted the job.

Yes, it is to early to talk about it. You're insane to think that a coach on the hot seat can succeed in recruiting.

Tim was a breath of fresh light and looked suave. He was the new savior. He had connections with the Bulls and he could not pass up the payday with Jerry. He recommed LE Idaho.

LE made a bad name for us in the papers after making a great name for himself as national coach. The AP pics were posted everywhere like he was doing sorority row on every road trip. Who would touch a program after that bad PR?

Wayne was a logical choice to take over since he had been SDS HC and the players thought he was dad. Then ESPN plastered the airwaves with the tournament misfire on funding. So Wayne broke the last pole in his tent.

Greg made a quick call and offered his fine credentials. The previous team blew town except for Rashon. We had our Michael "Waterloo" Taylor and it was a wild trip. Hope sprang when we had some excitement with Mike as he dribbled everywhere on the court. Hope sprang once again the next year when we had the Jiri with an injured Rashon and Wesley (Big Three). Life was good until Wesley lost interest and transferred. Year Three has the annointment of Craig as supreme team leader. Yet we see little scoring from the other players. Craig has grown into his role thank god. Next will be Year Four and more in house training for our guards and hope springing eternal for recruiting HB.

I offer that we are once again due for some better times at Hilton. The program has not fallen, it has just been in tumultuous turmoil. The pieces just keep coming and going.

I agree with your year 5 statement, but I'm not sure what two coaches your talking about. Morgan and ?

Surely not McCarney? I wouldn't consider that a premature firing since he had already built the program and we were starting to see a decline.

Even Morgan is debatable since ISU didn't have much choice after the scheduling scandal.

He probably thinks Morgan and Eustachy.

No coach wanted the job after the LE fiasco because A. LE was well liked among coaches nationwide and most would want the program to work with them in a situation like that and B. The negaive national attention at the time. Not to mention BVD was a DB.

He probably thinks Morgan and Eustachy.

Yup.

If a coach doesn't doesn't do jack his first four years his seat should be flaming hot. We aren't Penn State.
