Eli King??

I think the long term vision for Eli King remains more of a combo guard. My default comp would be Kantrail Horton. Someone strong with the ball, making an entry pass, could be a second PG but also a good shooter, good at getting to the rim.

Iowa State is one of the oldest teams in the country, and King is a freshman. He will get his time. Our team needs good-plus 4-year players with high upside like Eli King. If he's not getting major minutes until his Junior season, it's still great for us. I think ultimately it's perfectly fine as long as his growth puts him in a spot to take an increasing role by season 3.

I’m not saying empty the whole bench earlier. I’m saying put Eli in with the regulars at maybe the 8 min mark. He entered the game with 3 minutes left. He is a scholarship player not a walk-on.
I was hoping he'd be in with the regulars alot earlier but I've noticed over the years coaches don't really do this.

I dont know of they are scared of losing a huge lead or they just don't think the player deserves the minutes. If anything it gets him alot better game experience and possibly keeps a regular from getting hurt in garbage time. Coaches just don't seem to think this way though.

ISU gave up a 17 point lead last week in about 7-8 minutes and an 8 point lead in about one minute Saturday.

Tech was off last night but I'd guess closing it out with authority was a priority.
Sometimes you need to feed a kid a bone that is working hard in practice, cheering for his teammates from the bench, and on scholarship. I would understand if it was a 15 point lead with 8 minutes to go, but it was not. What kind of message is that sending the kid. I'm sure TJ has talked to Eli and he knows exactly where he stands, but it just seems odd to not play him earlier last night.

So if TJ has communicated with him and he knows where he stands there really shouldn't be concerns from fans.

It really can be that simple.

If ISU finishes in the top 3ish of the B12 I'll bet this thread is the go-to for the 'but what about the hiring process!?' crowd to lean on.

Not sure what Eli has to do with finishing top three and the "but what about the hiring process?" crowd.

I don't think Eli needs to be in the rotation, I don't think he should be taking someone else's minutes, and I am not writing him off as a future contributor. I was just surprised he didn't enter the game sooner when we were up 30 pcs at home. I doubt there will be other opportunities like that in conference.

This right here. Many on this site were bemoaning Kalschuer, Jones, and Grill coming back It's amazing how much a yr or summer of practice can help. This isn't a perfect team but we are way better on offense this yr compared to last while still maintaining the defensive intensity.

Not very long ago there were posters thinking TJ needed to get rid of Gabe. That he was dead weight. Eli is a freshman. From Caledonia Minnesota. Let him learn and adjust. We are stacked at #2 guard. He has time to develop.

Because you don’t screw around and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Our goal is team victory. Concern over individual minutes is not thinking Team.

So you’re saying if you have a scholarship that means you have to get PT if you try hard in practice and are a good teammate? That’s not really how it works.

Not sure if we'll see this with Eli this year or not, but Jaden Walker went from a non-factor the first 18 or so games last year to earning spot minutes during a critical stretch of schedule. If Eli sticks with it and TJ needs him to give something, he'll get an opportunity.

Not trying to disparage or give up on Eli here.

But if you recruit three guys and the three of them turn out to be...

#1 is an absolute stud, earns a starting spot early in his career, never gives it up, eventual all-B12 guy

#2 comes along slowly and is eventually a solid bench guy or even starter in the B12

#3 is a bust... not a bad kid or anything, but belongs in the MVC or something like that

Well, that's about what you should expect from the class much of the time.

That being said, Eli is behind a lot right now. Lipsey is a prodigy. Kalscheur and Grill are playing out of their minds, and Holmes is like 40 years old or something. There's not a lot of guard time left after them.
This is so true. Even the blue bloods see this with their constant stream of five star “can’t miss” prospects.

There's a stronger case for Watson and Ward to get more PT in a game like this than Eli King.

Ya, you don’t take any chances in this league.

He’s played a total of 19 minutes in 5 games. I don’t know rules about a non-medical redshirt or if they’re even different. I’m sure someone else here does

I know there was a proposal to allow a certain number of games in the six to eight range without burning your potential for a redshirt. I don't know if that actually passed for basketball, though.

How many games can Eli play before he burns his redshirt?
To the best of my knowledge once he plays, he can't. I'm no expert but I don't think bball has followed football and wrestling with regard in allowing some PT and still using a redshirt.

In spite of some people's insistence that if you dare to discuss him at all you're actually saying that he should get starter minutes, that's my only real question about the whole thing. Sure he could have played 7 minutes instead of 3 last night or in a couple other games but that's not going to amount to much and isn't going to change his or our trajectory at all. I just don't understand why we burned a year of eligibility for ~20 minutes of game time in a season. He's stuck behind better, more experienced players this year. That's fine, but if he's good enough that he ends up being a year 2-3ish contributor, I could see us wishing he had another year beyond that because we may not be one of the oldest teams in D1 basketball by then and the experience could be a big deal. And if he's not, I could see him and whatever program he ends up with wishing he had this year back because he's gotten no value out of his limited time on the court.

I'm just a random message board guy like everybody else here so nothing I say amounts to anything. He seems happy on the sideline and you never hear a bad word about the kid so I'm not going to speak for him. Hopefully it's all puppies and rainbows and he/his family and TJ have it all sorted out.

There is such a huge jump from small school Minnesota high school basketball to Big 12 basketball on the defensive end. Offensively im sure he would hold his own out there, but defensively that transition is going to take time for most people. And to the people saying he faced top level competition on the AAU circuit, youre correct, but the defensive intensity there isnt even close to the next level, even though the talent is similar. Eli will be fine, there is just a transition period. Thats normal.
