Lipsey Shoutout

Marcus Smart won DPOY last year.

I said I don’t think he’ll be as good. I think he’s the most comperable type of player in nba though, Hunter was easily elite as a defender compared to other freshman point guards.

Monte is a pretty good comp for lipsey so we don’t have to look that far. Lipsey is better athletically/physically but Monte was better fundamentally as freshman. They don’t appear to be miles apart which is great since Monte is top ten in like a dozen big 12 all time stats.

Marcus Smart (pg) is his comp, but I doubt he’ll be as good. If he was a great shooter Nate Robinson (small sg) is his comp.
Marcus smart is a great comp. And the Celtics are a great example of a team that spreads the PG duties across the roster. Tatum gets assists and runs offense. Brogdon does too. Hell even their bigs get in the act. By my quick math, the next 5 guys leading in assists after Smart add up to average almost 17 assists per game.

I don't know why people keep bringing up Hunter unless they are still a little b-hurt over him transferring.

Tamin is doing what he needs to do with the team he is on.

Hunter was exactly what they needed last year to win 22 games. They don't do that with Tamin. Not a knock.......just wouldn't have happened. Different type of player. He is not quite the defender Hunter is..........yet. And that is what they needed last year.

So enjoy Tamin for who he is and what he brings to the table and forget about someone who is no longer here.

We lost TWO starting point guards in one off season and it turns out the local kid freshman is also easily a big 12 caliber starting point guard.

Not only can we talk about that, we celebrate it.

Totally agree on the Celtics roster. Just not seeing the Smart/Hunter comp personally. I actually have a hard time finding a comp I like for Hunter so not arguing. To me he's undersized, not a great shooter, not great vision/passing, but high level athleticism. Be hard for him to make it in the NBA IMO but we'll see. Easier now than ever for smaller guys to make an impact in the league.

Ya. The size difference between the 2 makes it hard for Hunter to defend like Smart.

Might have to depend on who would give him a shot and what they value. Like if they want someone who can defend to create problems for the opponent than Hunter fits that.

That GlobeTrotters shot from the left side that Tamin banked in high off the glass yesterday...
Did he have that ball pinned against his forearm?
I've never seen that shot before.

So PG’s don’t play defense. They don’t shoot? They don’t make big plays? They don’t create turnovers? Those aren’t “PG skills”?
He reminds me of Tyus Jones that plays for the Grizzlies
Tyus Jones is a better shooter. I like Marcus Smart comparison, although Hunter is few inches shorter, not as strong, and does not possess acting skills that Smart has

Our offense runs so much better and smoother when he's on the floor. I also think he's a better player and probably more of what this team needs right now than the Hunter we saw last year and are seeing with Texas this year.

Obviously Lipsey is beyond his years in basketball IQ, but two things that stick out to me are his abilities to use tempo and penetration speed change to get separation and how astute he is at using body and ball positioning to shield defenders when driving the lane. He had a layup yesterday where he used both of those skills, making it impossibly for the defender to come over the top to attempt a block. Tyrese was absolutely atrocious at this and was blocked routinely both on fast breaks and driving the lane. It's a rarity for Lipsey to get blocked and that's largely based on his mastery of the above skills.

I wasn't happy when Otz pulled him with roughly 4.5 minutes to go when he picked up his 4th foul. When you have someone as important as Tamin to have on the floor, you don't reduce minutes arbitrarily. If left on the floor it's just as likely he finishes the game without picking up a foul than it is for him to foul out. It ended up not mattering yesterday, but I hope Otz leaves him in should a similar situation arise in a close game. No point in assuring limited minutes when the player has a high chance of finishing the game. That's something many coaches do that I will never quite understand.

I didn’t mind TJ sitting him there, but it probably should have been just to buy a minute or two and then right back in.

He’s a great game manager. Dude hustles and plays tough defense and can score when he needs to. My only knock on him is that he has a bad outside shot. He airballed a wide open corner three earlier in the season and barely hit rim on one shot yesterday against Baylor. He’s a tremendous passer and as a freshman he’s already a stud.

Marcus Smart is 6’4” 220 lbs. Hunter is 6’ 175. Don’t see the comparison

Bulldog elite defender with explosive athleticism who can get to the rim and is a streaky/inconsistent outside shooter, decent passer but not elite passer or playmaker. Seems to fit both as a rough description. I didn’t mean they’d have exact same NBA career. The 6‘ is the reason why I said he wouldn‘t be as good. Hunter will continue to get bigger and stronger as most teenagers do vs NBA veterans, but he’s not going to get a lot taller and he can’t shoot like a Nate Robinson short SG.

Lipsey probably has more upside if he can improve his outside shot because he’s already a better playmaker. Neither are guys who will leave early to take the guaranteed first round pay day the way it was pretty obvious Halliburton was going to be.

Right on the money but Hunter is no where close to Smart when it comes to acting skills.

Felt that we would have to live thru Lipsey's development this season, but didn't expect it this quick. He may already be the most important player on this team. We don't have another primary ball handler.

As far as Hunter, best NBA comp is Eric Bledsoe
