49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

One thing about BP I have been thinking about is that he was recruited by Alabama. IMO, he made the right choice to go to ISU and play three + years as a starter, as at Alabama, he would have had to contend with:

Jalen (Eagles) and Tua (Dolphins) in 2017
Tua (Dolphins) and Jalen (Eagles) in 2018
Tua (Dolphins) and Mac (Patriots) in 2019
Mac (Patriots) and Young (TBD) in 2020

All (except for Young) are current NFL starters just like BP!

I think after 3 + years in Ames and his current situation in SF, he might have been able to see his way through @ Alabama too. 'Twould have been tough, but no tougher than what he is doing now.

BTW, I received my 49ers knit cap today that BP was rocking after the Bucs game.
Des Moines is now officially a 49ers Town. :)

I assume if you have the red zone channel that is a good option to watch the 49ers game on Saturday since that time slot only gets shared with Eagles vs cowboys.

NFL RedZone will switch back and forth between these two games as they are the only 2 games in the late window. There's a website called 506 Sports. They put out the maps of where NFL games are to be aired across the country. The maps are out on Wednesday. KCCI will probably air Bills at Bears.

Does KCCI take any viewer input into choosing? Tell them every Iowa and Iowa State fan in their viewing area wants to watch the 49ers.

They could. In Wyoming the Bills are aired in that market because of Josh Allen. When Baker Mayfield was in Cleveland it wasn't out of the ordinary for the Oklahoma City market to get Browns games. So it has happened before. The website is 506sports.com.

KCCI will only have one game on Saturday because Fox has the doubleheader. Odds are super high that it's the early window.

The late CBS window (49ers) will likely be limited to areas around SF and DC.

It's all pretty crazy. I can't imagine any Cyclones fans saw this coming. Makes you wonder how many third stringers that could've produced have languished and never got the shot Brock has. But really, he couldn't be in a better spot.
I argued this during preseason that there are likely players who if given a chance would be decent, but teams too often recycle players who've played and failed instead.

Brock does a lot of things really well that NFL teams (especially Shanahan teams) like. He is accurate in short and medium ranged passes, he quickly goes through progressions, and he has the athletic ability to move around in the pocket.

It’s not terribly surprising to me that he is succeeding in the league. I definitely didn’t expect it to go so well so soon, but I’m so happy to see it!

IF he continues to improve on the trajectory he is on, there is no reason he couldn’t be a starting QB for a few years. I think Brock would be the first guy to say that he benefits from his coaching and the weapons he has around him. I doubt he would look as successful in Houston or New York.. however, there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of the opportunity he has. He DOES look better than Mullins or Beothard or the other various backup QBs that SF has won with the past decade. He not only has done the on-rhythm throws, he has been able to create a few plays of his own.

A lot of fans gave him a lot of crap here at ISU.. people acting like he “lost his mind” in the Iowa game or other instances.. as if it’s Brock’s fault that he had receivers completely miss catchable balls or defensive linemen being allowed to jump with both hands in the air and tip passes.

Put BP in a system with a star RB, TE, and WR, with one of the best offensive lines in the country? Surprise surprise, he is incredibly efficient and successful, and occasionally makes a really great play.

Trey Lance has more upside (see, e.g. Josh Allen rookie season to now), but BP lets them win now. There is no guarantee Trey figures it out. BP seems like he already has.

But really, he couldn't be in a better spot. Shanahan's systems is designed for a guy like Brock to thrive. Like Aikman said during the Seahawks game, the single most important stat for Brock is the zero in the INT column. And keep in mind he got away with one in the first half that ended up being a 14 point swing for SF...so as ever, it's better to be lucky than good.

All that said, Brock's shown balls and you can tell his teammates love it.
Brock got lucky on that pass, but I don't know if you can call it a 14 point swing. The 49ers defense is pretty stingy. I can't remember where that pass was, but it seems like it was in the middle of field.

The west coast and the DC/Baltimore area will get the game for sure. There are no other west coast teams playing other than SF in the late window so places like Los Angeles,Phoenix,San Diego and Las Vegas will more than likely show Wash/SF. Other major markets that may get the game due to local teams playing on Fox in the early window include Seattle,Kansas City,New York,Minneapolis,Atlanta,Detroit and Charlotte. For example last week the Fox station in Kansas City aired NE vs LV due to the Chiefs playing on CBS at noon.

True that Brock is in a 'great situation' and only got the opportunity due to not one injured QB, but two. But kudos to him for being prepared and poised. In no way is this a 'told you so' remark, nor a claim that I saw this coming w/Brock getting his chance so early, but rather a flashback to so many smh moments when reading comments on this board. Fans who kept saying how much better HD would be, or that Brock couldn't throw the deep ball, etc., etc., etc.. Is was almost like they thought those 30plus records he broke were luck or something. I realize he has some limitations and there will be bumps in the road, but man I hope he keeps it up.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but an unnamed scout compared Brock to Joe Burrow.

Started talking about Brock at 11:30. The discussion on Brock comparables starts around 19:28.

What sticks in my mind is how thorough NFL organizations research available draftees which start with and ends with the head coach and GM. Shanahan and the GM did their due diligence and took BP when given the chance and they saw something in him. They shopped Jimmy G and chances were BP was going to be QB2 all along. The XFL and all the other minor leagues are full of QB’s with stronger arms but BP can process, go thru progressions and move around. He may have all ready jumped Trey for all we know. If he can avoid INT’s and sustain drives on 3rd down, he could be more than a flash in the pan.

It was, but football is so emotion and momentum driven I could see the Seahawks scoring there...but this is why I really believe the 49ers could get to the SB, you're quite right about the SF defense. I think they're good enough to win a SB. Brock has a relatively simple role to play on this team.

If Samuel comes back SF looks built for playoff ball.

They can run and put several offensive players all over the field to just very efficiently move down the field.

The NFL requires a QB to push the the ball down the field into tight windows from the pocket. This will always be a problem for Purdy IMO, and will limit his role to a backup (not a bad situation).

Similar to when Flacco (?) was the Baltimore QB?

Yeah, he is in a position where they are mostly going to be asking him to not mess up. So far he has been able to find guys wide open 20-30 yards down field, which means that teams have no respect for him getting the ball there. TB and the Dolphins tried to blitz him. The Seahawks tried to cover more. He diced up all three teams pretty bad.

Ya I doubt Purdy even sees the field at Alabama. He's not as athletic as Tua, Jalen and Young. Maybe beats out Mac but he was better to get the time here.
