49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

God ****, those are terrible games.
  • Thursday Night: Jacksonville @ NY Jets (Amazon)
  • Saturday 8:15 ET: Las Vegas @ Pittsburgh (NFLN)
  • Christmas Early: Green Bay @ Miami (FOX)
  • Christmas Late: Denver @ LA Rams (CBS/Nick)
  • Sunday Night: Tampa Bay @ Arizona (NBC)
  • Monday Night: LA Chargers @ Indianapolis (ESPN)
Gotta think there will be some flexing-- but then I see sunday night- yeah two **** teams but Tom Brady.. probably not flexing that out.

Brady on a hometown discount is still much more expensive than Purdy on a rookie contract. Signing Brady or Rodgers is going to disrupt that pristine roster you describe (and you're not wrong about that) by needing to clear some cap space or flipping a few draft picks over somewhere in a sign-and-trade.

Purdy + Current Roster + Draft Picks > incremental benefit of veteran minus roster changes

I think you roll with Brock and (maybe) sign a high-floor but low-ceiling backup who is okay mentoring him and draft 1-2 QBs in the draft in the later rounds for development and as an insurance policy.
I see 0% chance for Rogers. I see 10% Brady because he might be willing to take a cheap 1 year deal. But I still see it being 90% Brock, Lance and some journeyman veteran going into next year with cash going to shoring up some of their other FAs.

I just think if Brady comes calling the temptation from the org is going to be there to consider it.

As a reference, the 2022 cap hit for Brady was $11.9M. Lance's cap hit in 2023 and 2024 will be $9.3M and $10.9M. While I still don't think they move Lance, the cost of Brady and the cheapness of Lance's rookie deal are both overstated pretty significantly.

Frankly if I had to put my life savings on one QB being on the roster next season it would be Purdy.

I think the change in Brock's mechanics is overrated. I believe the most important "fix" the 49ers made for Brock was giving him an excellent offensive line. It's amazing what a QB can do with a consistent running game and pass protection.
Also, his fancy, double fake screen left and right to a delayed release tight end ,was thrown off his back foot.

Where are all the back foot dudes on this board complaining about his technique?

Lol.

Tony Gonzalez also seemed to have trouble getting a word in. Wouldn’t mind listening more to him. Never could stand Sherman so the whole telecast was too much of him for me.

Has to be bizarre for Brock, going from Soener, Allen, and Kolar to Kittle. I think their personalities were more in line with Brock.

Brock is also very religious. Will see in time if the talking heads try to tune him out like they did Warner because of that.
Also, I'm sure a lot of people on this board have to bite their lip because they sure are anti-religious.

I am not religious, but I find a lot of a comments over the board.

You know it's driving the Hogeye faithful nuts with Halliburton's and Purdy's success.
Yeah, my BiL is a huge Hawk fan and I have really enjoyed needling him about Purdy the past few weeks. I know he is (desperately) hoping the other shoe drops and Purdy fails miserably.

Okay, we agree on most of this.

Obviously Brock has to keep it rolling the rest of the season for this to happen, but if he does look the part the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs, then I would...

-- like you said, a journeyman QB as a mentor/backup to Brock
-- keep Lance's modest cap hit or try to move him -- but can't cut him ($20.1 million in dead money)
-- maybe still take a late-round guy aimed at the practice squad

Brock's cap hit is hilarious for how cheap he is --

You can bring in a handful of quality veterans to fill out your roster in what he saves relative to even the going rate for an average quarterback -- never mind what the superstars are making.

Did you see what Kittle said to Purdy after the game? Asking him about how many times he beat Iowa? Would be great to see Purdy succeed without involving Kittle at all.

You couldn't tell they were joking? "I call him Big Cyclone Brock." "He wears that gear all the time."

Believe me, I am an avid hater of the Hawks and a lot of their former players. Kittle included until recently. But damn if they aren't a solid duo. If throwing to Kittle helps boost Brock's play/stats/confidence, then throw to him whenever he can.

I dont even think Kittle said that anyways. I think Fitz asked him how he did in the rivalry.

omg maybe next year they'll bet and the loser will have to wear the others school colors!! how dare them

brock might have to wear hawkeye stuff! niners need to trade kittle now

come one man, this is a dumb hill to die on lol

I think the chances he ends up as Brady or Rodgers back-up in SF next year is high.
Gotta disagree big time here. SF has a lot of good things going including chemistry. They need a serviceable QB, not a home run. Way to much risk bringing in those disruptions.

It is a longshot but Mr. Purdy has a lot to say in this yet over the remaining games and into the playoffs. If he is taking the snaps and they win 1 or 2 in the playoffs, going to be hard to count him out.

They're teammates on an NFL team who is trying to win the Super Bowl. Two of the touches Kittle had last night went for Touchdowns which were the scoring difference in the win.

Do you huff and puff around all your coworkers who are Iowa fans too?
