This is what is wrong with Major League Baseball. Hope a small market team sends them home.
The teams that only spend 50 million when they could totally afford more are worse to be. A least the teams spending all this money are going for it.
I would think eventually baseball will realize that the NFL's model is vastly superior and would raise the level of interest. I know the players union is very much against it, but if a floor was instituted as well, it would benefit everyone.
Agree that the teams spending a quarter of what the Mets are is the other side of what’s wrong with MLB.
Point remains that this Luxury Tax model is not good for the sport.
On High Heat today, MadDog said this signing will go down as the worst transaction in Giant history. He said this was MVP or HOF type player money, of which Correa is neither.
I think the long timeline contracts are in part to help stay under luxury tax threshold. But 13 years.. damn.
Still, it’s no Bobby Bonilla deal.
That's exactly what they are, and the commissioner I believe has already mentioned it as something they will discuss. I can't see the players union agreeing to any contract length limit though.
Wow. $27 million/yr and he’ll probably pitch only half of those six years. Glad the Yankee$ are footing the bill on this one.
In 2027, the Yankees will be paying the combination of Rodon (35), Judge (35), Cole (36), Stanton (37) $128 million. The luxury tax in 2026 is set at $244 million. Over half of their payroll will be 35 year olds. Granted, they have some unreal studs coming up, but still.
Phillies will be paying Bryce Harper and Trea Turner $52 million the same year they are both 38.
