Ive been reading the posts about the best resturants in Ames and it made me hungry thinking about Battle's, unfortunately I cant find anything in the Des Moines area that stacks up. So I was wondering if there was anything even close to Battles level in the Des Moines area

Jethro's BBQ. It is fantastic.

All of the regional specialties done CORRECTLY.

Pulled Pork with the appropriate regional BBQ sauces.
Brisket with the authentic regional sauces. They even have the esoteric Alabama Sauce.

Flying Mango is the best IMHO. It is hard to compare it to Battles though since they are different types of places. Jethro's is pretty great as well.

I haven't found any "Battles type" places in DSM though that have the same quality and consistancy.

When Pigs Fly, owned by Hez Jackson former ISU Fullback
Is that the place on 86th just south of 80/35
Some guys from work and I went there and it was VERY good, but portions were pretty small compared to what we go for.

I'll be darned! I tutored Hez for his geology class back in the 90s... nice guy, I should stop by passing thru DSM sometime for some good bbq....

also, regarding another comment on Jethro's, I'm not sure "esoteric" and "alabama" should ever belong in the same sentence...

Smokey D's BBQ. This place is great!

20 NW 54th Ave off the beaten path and carry out only but great BBQ.

I really like Smokey D's, I have only been to the one in the skywalk. Always busy at lunch time. Shanes Rib Shack isnt bad in WDM either.

Jethro's gets my number 1 vote. Their sides set them apart.

Flying Mango probably has the best barbecue, but its not really a barbecue joint...
