I clicked on the Yahoo link to see his rationale. Essentially, he said that we need to expand because so many players want to get into the tournament, but only one-third do.

Fran actually wants a 16 or 8 team tournament.

He has figured out that you play your starters big minutes and beat Western Michigan by 80 points, and when you are getting curb stomped by a good team once the opponent puts their walk-ons in you press the hell out them with your starters to salvage some efficiency.

Then voila, you are a metrics darling and a top 16 team. Sweet 16 here we come, Hoks.

It’s honestly not that hard to get into the way it is now.

It shouldn't be for competent P6 programs. There are 200+ Division 1 programs that probably wouldn't agree that it is easy to get into though.

Everyone is essentially in now with conference tournaments. With the possible exception of the Ivy schools, every other school has a clear path to the NCAAs no matter how bad their regular season was.

This is being driven by coaches only who want to save their own asses. Nobody else with functioning brain cells is interested in expansion.
